Description
We are looking for an experienced Bilingual Associate Designer (Retail) who will report to the Director of Design Studio (Director). The Associate Designer works closely with the design production team and is responsible for managing assigned projects, including development of concept drawings and designs. The Associate Designer is responsible for designing retail facilities with a primary focus on automotive, meeting client expectations, while ensuring work meets the project schedule deadlines and is within project scope and budget.
Successful candidates must have primary fluency / bilingual proficiency in Quebecois French and Canadian English, have a strong resume reflecting project experience, specifically in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction field, with an educational background in architecture, engineering, or interior design.
- Develop, maintain, and implement national specifications for an automotive retail corporate image program, in both English and French.
- Prepare, review and update design documents during schematic design and design development phases.
- Depending upon the size and scope of each project, render conceptual design ideas and prepare 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings (Revit, Lumion, Photoshop). All work to be prepared digitally.
- Prepare/ supervise the preparation of drawings by production team, specifications, and other construction documents.
- Review and comment on design and technical documents prepared by automotive franchise owner’s project consultants.
- Support clients’ teams throughout construction phase.
- Travel to different project sites across Canada as required (~15% of role) to monitor project progress or sign off on project completion.
- Work closely and collaboratively with design team to meet overall project objectives, manage client expectations, team communication and consultant coordination.
- Assist in the coordination and review of technical work of associate designers on projects, providing mentoring and guidance.
- Review and prepare summary reports on design and technical documents, including construction drawings, prepared by automotive franchise owner’s project consultants (local architects / engineers), in a timely manner.
Requested skills
- Primary fluency / bilingual proficiency in Quebecois French and Canadian English languages.
- Minimum Bachelors degree in Architecture, Interior Design or Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a designer in the following areas: Retail or multi-disciplinary design/architectural practice (preference to Quebec-based experience).
- Knowledge of Canadian / Provincial building code standards.
- Proven ability and experience managing people, expectations, and tight deadlines.
- Proficient in AutoDesk (Revit), Sketchup, Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
- Proficiency in 3D modelling (Lumion) and rendering programs is an asset.

- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and stakeholders.
- Exceptional organization and analytical skills with different sources of data.
Working conditions: On-site (position based in Toronto)
Position type: Permanent full-time (40 hours per week), with the possibility of overtime and some travel required (approximately 15% of the time)
