POSITION DESCRIPTION:
SENIOR SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER (FULL-TIME)
We are currently inviting applications for the Full-time position of Social Studies Teacher. This position will commence September 1, 2026.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and implement the core Social Studies program for assigned grades 8 12, ensuring alignment with the BC Ministry of Education curriculum and/or Advanced Placement standards, as well as the Southridge Senior School Education Program.
- Develop and design unit plans and lessons with clear learning intentions that enable students to strive for their highest level of achievement
- Maintain deep knowledge of grade-level curriculum and subject matter
- Create a learning environment where students engage actively, think critically, and explore ideas together using a student-centred, discussion-based, collaborative approach (Harkness)
- Assess and report on student academic progress and essential skills, drawing attention to areas of achievement and areas requiring further development
- Support the purpose and actualization of the Southridge mission, vision, and values and appreciate how these continuously shape and influence our community
- Uphold age-appropriate behaviour expectations, including Senior School Student Code of Ethics and relevant policies and guidelines
- Act as an advisor to build a sense of community and belonging within the advisory group while also monitoring and supporting each advisee s academic, co-curricular, and personal growth
- Attend and participate in core school functions and special events
- Participate in the co-curricular programme of the school
- Additional duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Employee Handbook
- A Bachelor of Education degree, with undergraduate studies in Social Studies
- Hold a valid BC teaching certificate or an independent teaching certificate
- Must be highly collegial and a collaborative team partner
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills and strong organization skills
- A high level of initiative, energy and motivation
- The capacity to function effectively within a busy, high-functioning department and school
- A proactive and innovative approach to solving problems
- Proven work ethic and a high level of integrity
- Effective interpersonal skills to establish connections, build trust and rapport with students and parents
- A proven understanding of children developmentally
- Experience teaching at the Senior School level in an independent school environment is an asset
- Advanced Placement experience is an asset
- Experience teaching in a technology rich environment is an asset
