Description
Our valued client is looking for a Senior Mainframe Performance and Capacity Management Engineer to oversee real-time monitoring, anomaly detection, and capacity optimization for a large-scale, mission-critical z/OS mainframe environment.
The ideal candidate will use advanced tools and deep technical expertise to detect and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize infrastructure resources, and support critical business workloads. This role requires close collaboration with infrastructure, DevOps, operations, and application teams to ensure consistent system performance and data-driven decision-making.
Tasks
- Performance Management & Capacity Planning
- Monitor real-time system health across CPU, memory, DASD, and WLM-managed workloads using tools such as RMF, SmartIS, iZPCA, and MICS.
- Analyze performance data to identify trends, anomalies, and potential system degradation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve workload behavior issues, partnering with incident response teams.
- Recommend and implement performance tuning strategies, including workload reconfiguration and priority adjustments.
- Forecast resource usage and contribute to capacity planning and cost optimization strategies.
- Support IBM SCRT reporting, infrastructure sizing, and vendor reporting.
- Data Analysis & Reporting
- Collect and analyze system performance metrics; develop actionable insights and dashboards.
- Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
- Collaboration & DevOps Integration
- Work cross-functionally with operations, application, and infrastructure teams.
- Participate in on-call rotations for real-time performance issue response.
- Contribute to the migration of performance/capacity tools into Git and DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
Must-Haves
- 10+ years of mainframe systems experience in large, multi-LPAR, Parallel Sysplex z/OS environments.
- Expert in real-time mainframe performance monitoring and capacity management.
- Deep experience with RMF, SMF, WLM, MICS, and other mainframe performance tools.
- Strong hands-on skills in REXX, Python, JCL, and DB2.
- In-depth knowledge of PR/SM, batch processing, and job scheduling.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (charts, pivot tables, PowerPivot) and PowerPoint for reporting.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and optimize mainframe workloads in real time.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Mathematics, Finance, or a related quantitative discipline.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with iZPCA, MICS reporting, and IBM SCRT.
- Exposure to ADABAS databases.
- Background with DevOps practices and tooling in a mainframe context.
- Familiarity with Git-based change management and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience working with highly transactional, large-scale data systems.
- Ability to create executive dashboards and operational reporting tools.
- Previous experience in cost modeling and resource optimization in enterprise environments.
