Description
Line of Business: Corporate Areas - Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, and Procurement
Duration: 3 months
Location: Downtown Toronto (Hybrid - 2 days a week in office; Tuesday is a must)
Role Mandate:
The group is a team of Paralegals and Law Clerks that primarily handle defence matters issued against BMO in the Small Claims Court across Canada and respond to various court orders in matters to which the bank is not a party.
Team Structure:
Smaller team of 4 peers (including direct manager), working with 6 lawyers (7 including Associate General Counsel) Half of the role involves collaborative work while half will be conducted independently. Candidates should be skilled at both.
Role Responsibilities:
- Conducting answers to requests for information (RFIs) from external and internal stakeholders, undertakings, and pre-production requests.
- Processing and tracking settlement payments
- Preparation of legal documents (including briefs, pleadings, affidavits, etc.)
- Maintaining document files
- Communicating with external, internal, and opposing counsel
- Gather and analyst research data (statutes, decisions, legal articles, documents, etc.)
- Other litigation administrative tasks as required/needed
Must Have Skills:
- Law clerk/legal studies college diploma or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience working in the area of litigation at a law firm or in-house legal department
- Verbal/written communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Customer service/interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently/time management
- Knowledge of the litigation process in Ontario, as well as familiarity with the variations of litigation processes across Canada (except Quebec)
- Comfortability with court procedures and the use of precedents
- Microsoft office experience (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- iManage experience
- CanLII experience
Nice to Have Skills:
- Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario membership in good standing
Interviews:
1 round of 60 min conducted over teams. The interviews will be a panel with the hiring manager and two current team members.
Candidates should prepare to demonstrate experience with discovery, production orders, as well as handling document requests from lawyers.
