As Superintendent, Tailings, you will lead the day-to-day operations and long-term planning of the tailings management program at Red Chris Mine. Your work directly supports the safe, responsible, and efficient storage of tailings in line with Newmont’s global standards, industry best practice, and GISTM.
You will play a critical role in identifying and mitigating geotechnical and operational risks, managing the full life cycle of the tailings storage facility - from design through operation and closure. Your leadership will ensure that tailings plans are integrated into broader mine studies and project planning, supporting both current operations and future site objectives
You will act as the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer and collaborate with internal teams, external auditors, and the Engineer of Record to maintain world-class operational performance, safety, and sustainability standards.
- Supervise, guide, and participate in activities to maintain the performance of TSFs (Tailings Storage Facilities) and water dams through inspection, measurement, data management, interpretation, coordination, and reporting.
- Apply and improve systems and procedures for the management of the Red Chris TSF.
- Serve as the site’s point of contact with Newmont’s Corporate Tailings & Dams Team, track compliance actions, and report regularly on status and outcomes.
- Complete and submit monthly Critical Control Reports (CCRs) to the enterprise.
- Engage the Engineer of Record (EOR) in matters related to design, construction, operations, and monitoring of the TSF.
- Collaborate across site functions (mine operations, processing, environmental, capital projects, safety, and maintenance) to continuously improve facility performance.
- Ensure adequate quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures are in place during TSF construction activities.
- Participate in risk assessments for tailings and water management systems.
- Lead or support site projects related to tailings, water, and water management infrastructure, including life-of-mine planning.
- Provide inputs for annual operating and sustaining capital budgets, as well as five-year and life-of-mine strategic plans.
- Review designs, assess alignment with standards, and support integration across engineering disciplines.
- Apply relevant standards and ensure regulatory and internal compliance.
- Manage consultants and contractor budgets for services including but not limited to site investigation, technical study, and engineering design.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with site teams to share timely, relevant, and accurate information related to facility performance.
To excel in this role, you will bring a strong combination of technical knowledge, operational experience, and leadership capabilities. The following qualifications and skills are essential:
- B.Sc. in Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mining, Metallurgical, Civil, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of direct tailings experience, including design, operation, and monitoring of tailings storage facilities.
- At least 10 years of progressive experience in mining, geotechnical engineering, or related roles.
- Prior accountability as a Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) or equivalent designation is strongly preferred.
- Must maintain BC Professional Engineering designation in good standing, or be eligible to register for this designation.
- Proven experience leading multi-disciplinary technical teams in a mine site or field-based environment.
- Strong knowledge of tailings deposition planning, construction planning, supervision, and water balance modeling.
- Knowledgeable in GISTM compliance, QA/QC protocols, and regulatory reporting.
- Experience with geotechnical slope stability instrumentation and monitoring programs, data management, and analysis.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely-educated audience.
- Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others.
- Effective communicator and collaborator across cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust, coach teams, and foster high performance.

Location: Red Chris Mine in Dease Lake, British Columbia - situated on the traditional territory of the Tahltan Nation
Schedule: 8/6, fly-in fly-out (FIFO) rotation, or as mutually agreed with hiring manager.
Accommodation: Camp-based lodging with meals, fitness facilities, Wi-Fi, and recreation amenities
Conditions: Mix of office and field-based leadership. Field leadership requires comfort in varied weather and terrain.
Competitive Pay: Annual salary of $148,900- $198,500 CAD, plus 25% STIP and 15% LTI, commensurate with skills, experience, and internal equity.

The expected salary range for this role is CA$148,900- $198,500 CAD, plus 25% STIP and 15% LTI . This range is tied to the British Columbia market for jobs performed in British Columbia. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.
