Technical Leadership
- Provide technical leadership in partnership with the Solution Architect.
- Guide decisions about the technology stack, architecture, and overall technical direction of the platform.
- Apply engineering approaches suited to large scale shared systems, collaborative data platforms, and developer ecosystems.
- Maintain strong engineering standards and promote best practices across the team.
Team Collaboration - Serve as a bridge between team members and foster a positive, productive working environment.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing, mentorship, and cohesive team dynamics.
- Act as a point of contact between the software development team and other product development teams, supporting alignment across product management, design, architecture, and engineering.
- Model team values including curiosity, radical candor, an owner’s mindset, and intrinsic motivation.
Problem Solving and Decision Making - Leverage technical expertise to guide the team toward effective problem solving when complex issues or roadblocks arise.
- Make informed decisions swiftly by evaluating technical trade-offs and resolving issues that arise during development.
- Provide clear technical direction for the team and apply strong technical judgment to support short term delivery goals and long-term system sustainability.
- Remain hands on, with 40 to 60 percent of time spent coding and contributing to complex platform components while guiding the broader technical direction of the team.
Code Review and Quality Assurance - Guide consistent code review practices and provide constructive feedback.
- Maintain adherence to development standards and support early identification of issues.
- Promote a consistent approach to software design and engineering quality across the platform.
Risk Management - Identify, mitigate, and resolve technical risks before they become blockers or vulnerabilities.
- Anticipate challenges related to system architecture, operational reliability, and scalability as the platform evolves.
- Work with the engineering team to surface risks early and address them through thoughtful design decisions and engineering practices.
Planning and Execution - Work closely with Scrum Masters and product leadership to support sprint planning and delivery.
- Help break down complex initiatives into manageable work items and guide technical prioritization.
- Support meaningful progress across development cycles.
People Management and Continuous Learning - Support professional development for engineers on the team.
- Ensure team members have the right opportunities to grow by understanding individual strengths and development areas.
- Work with team members to strengthen their capabilities over time.
- Stay informed of industry trends and emerging technologies.
- Encourage a culture of continuous learning within the engineering team.
- Encourage thoughtful adoption of modern engineering tools and workflows, including AI assisted development and design tools that support rapid iteration and experimentation.
UTILITX is building the first global infrastructure coordination environment where multiple organizations discover, contribute, and coordinate knowledge about the same space. The platform brings together inputs from many sources into a common reference system and shared operating layer for infrastructure activity. Here, users collaborate to build a world map for spatial intelligence. We are looking for a technical leader who thinks like a world builder and understands how to design and scale multiplayer environments and distributed data systems.
From guiding the team technically to fostering collaboration and building team culture, Tech Leads play a pivotal role in product development. The Tech Lead is responsible for the technical quality of the platform and for leading a team that builds, operates, and scales a globally available system used by many organizations working in the same space.
Required Skills / Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of software development experience with proven experience in technical or team leadership roles.
- Proficiency in our preferred programming languages and frameworks, TypeScript, NestJS and Next.js with the ability to take on complex technical challenges directly.
- Ability to lead change, set priorities, mentor team members, and build strong team relationships while remaining flexible and adaptable to new challenges.
- Current knowledge of industry best practices and development standards, including CI/CD, infrastructure automation, code reviews, and development workflows.
- Experience working with leading AI assisted development tools and workflows that support rapid coding, debugging, and design exploration.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and modern delivery workflows using tools such as Bitbucket Pipelines.
- Proficiency with data engineering and platform concepts, including data pipelines, data modelling, processing systems, and analytics environments.
- Strong database knowledge with relational, in memory, and non-relational databases.
- Experience with new software delivery in hyperscalers such as AWS.
- Familiarity with logging, monitoring, and observability tools.
- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Skills / Experience - ML, LLM-enabled workflows, AI metadata extraction, or AI-enabled product capabilities.
- Ability to evaluate and adopt emerging technologies that strengthen platform capabilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
The salary range for this position is $105,000 - $175,000, and individuals may be eligible to participate in our bonus program.
