TRADES - CARPENTER

This unionized position is 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Upon successful completion of probation, the employee will have access to a comprehensive benefits package that includes extended health and dental benefits, LTD coverage, and Municipal Pension Plan.

THE ROLE

This is skilled carpentry work at the journeyman level involving maintenance, alteration installation and construction of School District buildings, fixtures and equipment throughout the School District. An employee of this class exercises considerable independent judgement in completing assignments, and may supervise the work of one or more helpers engaged in less skilled tasks. Oral and written assignments which may be accompanied by blueprints and sketches are received from a supervisor or coordinator. Work may be reviewed in terms of conformance with standards and objectives. New construction or extended renovations may be required to be inspected by Provincial or Municipal Inspectors.

WHAT WE REQUIRE

Thorough knowledge of the current standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade.

Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.

Considerable knowledge of the applicable by-laws, rules, regulations and codes governing the trade work performed.

Working knowledge of other architectural trades necessary to install, maintain, and repair physical plant.

Ability to perform a variety of skilled tasks to established standards.

Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner using considerable independent judgement.

Ability to read blueprints and plans, maintain records, estimate materials needed, requisition parts and materials and complete reports as required.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to coordinate work effectively with staff, other trades and outside contractors.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, other trades, and outside contractors and work in a team environment as necessary.

Ability to supervise the work of one or more helpers as required.

Skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment used in the trade.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent, supplemented by technical courses related to the work, plus completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade. Two years related experience as a journeyman carpenter or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.

British Columbia Certificate of Qualification for Carpentry (T.Q.) or equivalent.

This is a full-time, unionized position, and the current rate of pay is $40.34. This rate will increase to $41.55 as of July 2024

All candidates are required to submit to a BC Ministry Criminal Record Check and a local Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
