CAMH’s donor funded Margaret and Wallace McCain Centre for Child, Youth and Family Mental Health (McCain Centre) is focused on enhancing and improving the design, delivery and effectiveness of mental health and substance use health systems, services and policies for children and youth aged 6-24. The McCain Centre combines evidence-based and innovative research techniques to ensure strong clinical utility and relevance in their initiatives.

The McCain Centre, in partnership with 14 Integrated Youth Services (IYS) networks across Canada, seeks a highly motivated full-time, contract (1-year) Scientific Associate to support the research objectives of a state-of-the-art, federated pan-Canadian IYS Learning Health System (LHS) data platform. This infrastructure aims to advance IYS knowledge, research, practices, and policies by enabling harmonized measurement, data integration, and advanced analytics. The platform supports the shared vision of ensuring every young Canadian has access to support to achieve their optimal outcomes. Reporting to the McCain Centre Research Operations Manager and the Principal Investigator, the Scientific Associate will play a crucial role in the Learning Health System cycle, transforming data into knowledge and mobilizing that knowledge to practice. This initiative demands a commitment to centering youth voices and equity in all aspects of the research cycle.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the research objectives of the IYS data platform, supporting the design and conduct of both qualitative and quantitative studies, providing support and supervision for required ethics approvals, qualitative data collection protocols and tools, quantitative data collection and analysis, and data management.

In addition, the Scientific Associate will collaborate with various IYS project teams in understanding the functioning of the learning health system in IYS.

Other responsibilities will include supporting the scientific team in creating, managing and monitoring detailed project work plans; working with research staff; grant-writing; and preparing presentations, manuscripts, and project reports.

Opportunities for publishing research articles, grant writing mentorship, and academic and non-academic presentations may be offered. In addition, the successful candidate will have opportunities to support related IYS research, evaluation, and data projects.

As an employment equity employer, CAMH actively seeks First Nations, Inuit and Métis candidates, those from ethno-cultural backgrounds, women, transgender and gender diverse people, people with disabilities, people with experiences of mental health and substance use, and intersecting identities.

The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of inclusive environments and will support and implement anti-oppressive and anti-racist best practices in the workplace. Understanding of and appreciation of systemic and personal privilege related to diversity, with ability to work with partners of diverse identities and ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required.

As a McCain Centre team member you will ensure that McCain Centre values are implemented; particularly regarding anti-oppressive and anti-racist best practices and youth-centeredness.

This position is located at our Queen Street site, at 80 Workman Way, Toronto ON.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Psychology, Education, Social or Behavioural Sciences (Health Services Research, Public Health, Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology), and have an interest in mental health and substance use research and strong mixed methods research skills in study design, measurement and data analysis. Minimum of one year of relevant research experience, gained through graduate studies, postdoctoral training, or equivalent professional experience, including conducting experiments, data collection, analysis, and dissemination through scientific publications in youth mental health and substance use research, data governance, and healthcare improvement is required. Training in interdisciplinary studies and ethnographic methods is an asset. Experience collaborating with diverse community groups, building strong, respectful relationships with diverse stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, healthcare providers, and youth and families with lived and living experience is required. Commitment to working from an anti-oppressive and anti-racist lens is required.

Applicants must have a proven track record of research project development, and execution, as well as peer reviewed publications. Direct training and demonstrated application of data privacy, data management, and ethical guidelines to data use and ownership (e.g., Ownership, Control Access and Possession OCAP® Principles) and knowledge of Indigenous data sovereignty in research governance and data management is required. The successful applicant will have experience working with interdisciplinary teams and managing complex projects. Superior interpersonal and organizational skills along with analytical and problem-solving skills are required. The successful applicant will be a self-starter able to manage multiple projects with exceptional accuracy and attention to detail. Demonstrated superior communication skills, i.e., ability to explain complex issues in plain language both verbally and in writing in a prior work setting is required.
