Aurora Virtual School is looking for an innovative and creative teacher to support an Alternative Suspension Pilot Program and to provide Community Outreach to AVS students. The Alternative Suspension Program Pilot aims to provide a supportive, structured environment for secondary students in the Yukon facing out-of-school suspensions. The program emphasizes education, and personal growth, offering support through personalized plans and school reintegration strategies. By addressing each student’s unique needs, the program fosters pro-social development and aims to equip students with tools for successful reintegration into the school community post suspension. Programming is offered during specific scheduled periods and may not align with the traditional 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM school day. Assignment: Alternative Suspension Pilot Program Teacher / Community Outreach Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent with teaching specialization in secondary math and science.
  • Experience coordinating, teaching and delivering curriculum for youth in an individualized and/or alternate learning environment, with varying abilities, styles and needs using a trauma-informed lens;
  • Experience working in partnership with Yukon First Nation Government departments and Community Organizations.
  • Experience delivering high school curriculum across all subject areas;
  • Experience working in a self-paced, self-directed learning environments and using individualized instructional process;
  • Experience teaching First Nations students in a culturally diverse community and co-facilitating land-based programming with Yukon First Nation partners.
  • Experience developing and implementing diverse and creative programs to meet the needs of students.
  • Certifications required for land-based programming including valid driver’s licence, Wilderness First Aid, Swift Water Rescue, Paddling Instruction are assets

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Philosophy of inclusive education; excellent interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills for working with students, parents, staff members, consultants, and related agencies.
  • Proven track record of developing innovative programing through community partnership.
  • Ability to set academic goals with students and teach using a variety of individualized instructional strategies in academic areas, on a self-paced curriculum;
  • Willingness and ability work as a member of a team to promote, support and work collaboratively with all staff members on multiple school goals and initiatives (Restorative Practices);
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate experiential learning and cultural practices into curriculum;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nation students.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
