Description
Reporting to the Cemetery Supervisor, the Assistant Backhoe Operator is responsible for supporting the cemetery’s daily operations by performing required duties safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the organization’s procedures.
The primary objective of this position is to become fully qualified to replace the Backhoe Operator when absent and to ensure quality standards for operations related to excavation and the interment of cremated remains and caskets.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
- Operate various types of machinery, including tractors equipped with maintenance attachments and, occasionally, a Kubota excavator;
- Follow established procedures for interments;
- Install bronze and granite memorial bases and plaques, working collaboratively with cemetery attendants;
- Learn all aspects of the Backhoe Operator’s duties and become fully qualified to provide coverage when required;
- Assist with crypt placements and interments and assume responsibility for these operations in the Backhoe Operator’s absence;
- Maintain machinery and equipment;
- Perform various general maintenance duties;
- Replace the gravedigger when absent;
- Perform cremations occasionally, based on operational needs;
- Clear snow from the cemetery on weekends according to the established schedule;
- Complete administrative follow-ups using the organization’s digital platforms;
- Perform any other related duties.
APPLICABLE WORKING CONDITIONS
- Replacement position;
- Work location: Based at Urgel Bourgie cemeteries on the South Shore. The employee may be required to work in other locations based on operational needs;
- Work schedule based on the Employer’s needs: Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a 30-minute unpaid meal break, as provided for in the collective agreement;
- Overtime may be required during the week or on weekends, depending on operational needs;
- Hourly wage: $27.01;
- Once fully qualified and scheduled by management to replace an absent Backhoe Operator, the Assistant Backhoe Operator will receive the Backhoe Operator’s rate of pay.
REQUIREMENTS
- Hold a valid Class 5 driver’s licence;
- Have basic knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repairs;
- Be in very good physical condition.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience operating an excavator is considered an asset but is not required to apply for the Assistant Backhoe Operator position;
- Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and versatility;
- Be able to work independently and in the presence of the public, including bereaved families.
