Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a nationally and internationally recognized academic health centre with multiple sites across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We provide expert, compassionate care to patients across Ontario, deliver broad and specialized education to thousands of learners, and lead cutting-edge research that shapes the future of healthcare.

 

As part of a major digital and clinical transformation, Sunnybrook is launching Project REACH, a multi-year initiative to implement a new health information system (HIS) across all campuses and satellite sites. Project REACH is rooted in clinical transformation and care redesign. Led by the Clinical Informatics Team, the project aims to enhance patient care, improve clinical workflows, and better support our care teams.

 

Summary of Duties:

We are seeking experienced leaders to serve as Project Directors for our Health Information System (HIS) implementation, Project REACH. Reporting to the Project REACH leadership team, Project Directors provide strategic and operational leadership for their assigned work stream, driving deliverables, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals and governance. They work closely with HIS vendor leads to support decision-making, manage risks, and maintain project momentum.

Project Director - Technology, Infrastructure, Devices

Technology

  • Led large-scale technology implementations in complex healthcare settings, with knowledge of interoperability, cybersecurity, and enterprise architecture.
  • Experienced with cloud infrastructure, including planning and migration in environments like Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
  • Skilled in hybrid/multi-cloud setups, focusing on scalability, uptime, and disaster recovery.
  • Proven ability to manage technical risk, coordinate vendors, and oversee end-to-end system testing and validation.

Infrastructure

  • Supported HIS implementations, including network readiness and hardware deployment.
  • Experience with data center migrations, network upgrades, and virtualization.
  • Worked closely with IT security and privacy teams to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., PHIPA).

Devices

  • Experience standardizing devices across multiple sites.
  • Knowledge of device integration, endpoint management, and user provisioning in secure healthcare settings.

 

Project Director - Integrations, Data Analytics & BI

  • Knowledge of system integration, data architecture, and APIs (e.g., HL7, FHIR).
  • Experience with data migration, validation, testing, and HIS readiness.
  • Skilled in managing technical risk, vendor coordination, and system performance validation.

Data Analytics

  • Familiar with BI platforms, data warehousing, and tools like Power BI and Tableau for clinical and operational reporting.
  • Experience ensuring data integrity and consistency across the lifecycle in collaboration with vendors.

Business Intelligence

  • Led data strategy and BI initiatives aligned with organizational goals.
  • Developed reporting and decision-support tools for clinical and operational leaders.
  • Understanding of enterprise data use for digital transformation and HIS optimization.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of the HIS implementation for your assigned work stream, serving as the accountable point of contact.
  • Manage and support a team of Clinical Informatics Specialists and IT Analysts to execute deliverables and engage stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, resource needs, and reporting for senior leadership.
  • Operate within established governance to drive decision-making and ensure alignment with Project REACH leadership.
  • Collaborate with HIS vendor partners to validate system design, uphold data standards, and escalate risks as needed.
  • Facilitate effective communication across internal and external stakeholders to promote transparency and shared accountability.
  • Monitor progress, manage risks, and ensure timelines, milestones, and quality standards are met.
  • Oversee integration activities including data migration, validation, testing, and system readiness.
  • Support change management and organizational readiness efforts to enable a successful transition to the new HIS.

 

Qualifications: Updated

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Healthcare, Information Systems) or equivalent experience; Master’s in Health Informatics or related field preferred.
  • 5–10 years of experience leading complex, organization-wide IT initiatives, preferably in healthcare.
  • Direct experience with HIS implementations and understanding of clinical, technical, and operational workstreams.
  • Strong project management skills, including risk management, timeline oversight, and stakeholder engagement; PMP an asset.
  • Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and manage vendor relationships.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills in fast-paced environments.
  • Knowledge of healthcare workflows, digital health regulations (e.g., PHIPA), and project governance.
  • Proficient with project management and collaboration tools to manage competing priorities and drive results.
