Job Description:

Sun Life, a global leader in financial services and insurance, is seeking an exceptional individual to join our Sustainability team as Assistant Vice-President (AVP) of Sustainability Reporting and Disclosures. This role is pivotal in advancing our core Purpose: helping Clients achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives, and our commitment to sustainability plays an important part in achieving that.

In this dynamic position, you will be at the forefront of Sun Life's sustainability efforts, working within a corporate team of over 40 highly specialized professionals under the leadership of our Senior Vice-President and Chief Sustainability Officer. Your role will be instrumental in shaping and executing our sustainability reporting strategy, ensuring our disclosures are insightful, credible, and adaptable to future needs.

As AVP, you will lead the development of proactive qualitative and quantitative reporting, overseeing the creation of our annual sustainability report and related materials. Your responsibilities will extend to overseeing the management of corporate client information requests, ESG ratings and assessment questionnaires, and internal reporting.

The sustainability landscape is rapidly evolving, with new regulations, expanding assurance requirements, and emerging technologies like AI reshaping the field. In this role, you will be a driving force for innovation in sustainability reporting, engaging with and advising executives on strategy during this transformative period.

You will collaborate with a broader network of sustainability teams across our global operations in Canada, the U.S., Asia, and Asset Management. Together, you'll contribute to the execution of our enterprise sustainability strategy, which has been endorsed by our Global Leadership Team and approved by our Board of Directors.

What you'll do:

  • Lead through a dynamic environment to influence reporting strategy for the future-intersecting with existing regulations and future regulations with the potential to significantly affect our work disclosures. Anticipate, monitor and prepare the organization for future regulatory reporting requirements and shifting external expectations.
  • Present clearly and impactfully to governance bodies and key executives, drawing on your ability to produce high quality supporting research and materials.
  • Provide executives with recommendations on future direction of sustainability reporting governance and oversight.
  • Explore potential for new tools like AI to be part of a comprehensive reporting strategy fit for the future
  • Act as a thought partner to the VP, Sustainability Reporting & Disclosures on strategic matters, often taking the lead on advising the CSO.
  • Seize the opportunity to demonstrate the impact of a refreshed sustainability strategy through reporting and content that is aligned and supportive of our business, while meeting wide-ranging stakeholder needs and interests.
  • Engage leaders and executives such as Finance, Risk Management, Government Relations and Legal as partners to help drive new and emerging reporting approaches that will ensure reporting remains relevant and serves the business while preparing for opportunities and challenges on the horizon.
  • Ensure continued strong processes and controls as the foundation of all reporting strategies, to give external report users, executives and our Board of Directors confidence in the information we put forward to the market.
  • Lead a high-performing team (9) and nurture top talent.
  • Represent Sun Life and the Sustainability Reporting & Disclosures team at important industry events, meetings, conferences, etc.

What you need to succeed:

  • Advanced knowledge of the sustainability reporting landscape globally, with a finger on pulse of upcoming / proposed regulatory developments and an ability to set strategy accordingly.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in sustainability with a strong emphasis on reporting
  • Senior-level experience leading high-performing, engaged teams
  • Knowledge of processes and controls for both qualitative and quantitative data
  • Demonstrated strength navigating complexity and ambiguity
  • Strong relationship and influence skills
  • Assiduous attention to detail
  • Reputation for high-quality work

Assets:

  • Experience in international financial services organizations
  • Knowledge of OSFI Guideline B-15, ISSB, ESRS and CSRD
  • Experience with ICSR
  • Experience bridging financial and sustainability reporting

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
