RDCRS Heavy Duty Technician - Shop Foreman

Montfort Centre 5210 - 61 Street Red Deer Alberta

Accountability:

This position reports directly to the Transportation Manager. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance activities of the shop and is an on-call resource for operations or the mechanic assigned to buses requiring attention. The incumbent must be prepared to assist in all aspects of maintenance when required.

Working in a fast paced, demanding environment, the incumbent must achieve set standards of maintenance within budgeted costs and in accordance with company policy and procedure including OH&S Regulations and Government Inspection Standards . Also to be responsible through himself and other Technician or Apprentices, for performing all assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and effective manner. Not to be confined to shop activities alone, the position is also expected to conduct field repair work on down buses either within the city limits or in the rural areas.

Must work very closely with the Transportation Manager, Assistant Transportation Manager, Dispatch, and driving staff. External relationships include suppliers, outside maintenance shops, and regulatory bodies.



Specific Accountabilities:

Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications, and Experience:

❏ Minimum of Grade 12 diploma from a recognized educational institution as approved by the Board of Education or a General Educational Development (GED) is required

❏ Minimum of three (3) years’ experience related to transportation and fleet maintenance

❏ Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience in the transportation industry

❏ Heavy Duty Journeyman Mechanic / Automotive Journeyman Mechanic

❏ Some diesel engine experience

❏ Certified to inspect light trucks, trailers, commercial buses and school buses (CVIP)

❏ Occupational Health & Safety Regulations is knowledge preferred

❏ Valid Class 2 Driver’s License with “S” endorsement

❏ Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

❏ Knowledge of the National Safety Code (NSC 13 Schedule)

❏ Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office and related programs

❏ Experienced in computer diagnosis

Required Skills and Abilities:

❏ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

❏ Ability to delegate work to staff and provide appropriate supervision or support to ensure that the quality of work meets requirements

❏ Clear understanding and ability to provide situational leadership

❏ Ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time

❏ Ensure shop safety and cleanliness through understanding and abiding by safety regulations policies and procedures

❏ Knowledge in tracking maintenance, defect reporting, maintenance programs and repair history

❏ Ability to provide for professional growth and evaluation of shop staff

❏ Ability to use a wide variety of repair parts technical manuals/computer programs to access information relative to the assigned duties and apply this information to the parts and preventative maintenance functions

❏ Ability to operate a service truck and make service calls in case of bus or vehicle breakdown

❏ Employees must be physically fit and able to handle various tasks involving lifting, bending, twisting, turning, and climbing

❏ Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written

❏ Ability to work in a team oriented, collaborative environment

❏ Present a professional attitude and appearance

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Transportation Shop Foreman shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not restricted to, the following:

❏ Develop, implement and maintain a preventative maintenance service program

❏ Review and recommend the repair and replacement of buses and fleet vehicles

❏ Prioritize work orders and assign appropriate shop staff

❏ Road test vehicles to verify complaints or repairs. Consult with mechanics about mechanical issues in regards to proper diagnosis and repairs to ensure the repair is done correctly

❏ Ensure that Department purchasing follows the guidelines established by the Board

❏ Assist/Advise with the development of the department's annual budget

❏ Maintain and control adequate inventory of vehicle parts and equipment

❏ Provide leadership, including planning, coaching, reviewing, and rewarding

❏ Develop and maintain a positive working rapport with the bus operators, staff and the public

❏ Assist the Transportation Manager to implement shop procedures and policies through positive example, and instruction to others

❏ Maintain awareness of technical developments and advancement in diagnostics, equipment, supplies and materials

❏ Maintain awareness of codes and regulations; converse with inspectors for regulatory agencies within the area of accountability

❏ Supervise contractors who may be engaged to perform service work for the Division fleet

❏ Promote safe work practices in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety, Board Policy and directives by supervisors

❏ Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institution that provides services to children

❏ Prepare reports as required by the Transportation Manager (IE. cost estimates, planning, inventory)

❏ Be knowledgeable about and supportive of Administrative Procedures and directives

❏ Be willing to engage in lifelong learning with respect to professional development, training, in-service and courses

❏ May be required to drive school bus

❏ Perform other duties as may be required or assigned by the Transportation Manager

Inventory and Equipment

❏ Maintain shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.

❏ Order equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records.

❏ Recommend replacement of existing equipment.

❏ Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.

❏ Direct the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot areas.

❏ Other duties as assigned.



Judgment, Independence, and Client Contact

  • Confidentiality:

At no time shall a Transportation Foreman discuss in public, information pertaining to anyone in the School Division. A Transportation Foreman is expected to respect the confidential nature of the position by avoiding discussion about any topics that are not formally communicated to the public by the Administration of the school or the School Division. Breaching confidentiality is a serious violation of acceptable conduct.

  • Independence:

The Transportation Foreman is expected to work independently and as a team member of the Transportation Department, all schools and the division office as required.

  • Client/Peer Contact:

This employee works collegially/professionally with all school staff, school-based administration and other division-based staff. Contact with other employees and outside agencies is regular and frequent.

The employee is under supervision and is responsible for the quality of the work and is expected to seek clarification and direction on any matters of concern.
