Heavy Duty Technician - Journeyman

(Transportation Technician)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Shop Foreman, the Transportation technician is responsible for planning, scheduling, and performing repairs and preventative maintenance on the district’s fleet of school buses. This position also assists in the maintenance and repair of trucks, and other motorized equipment, while ensuring accurate documentation and adherence to safety regulations. This role supports the safe and efficient operation of all district transportation vehicles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan and execute a scheduled preventative maintenance program for the district’s bus fleet.

Perform mechanical repairs on school buses, including major overhauls as required.

Respond to emergency service calls for disabled buses or other district vehicles.

Recommend the ordering and stocking of repair parts and supplies.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Assist in the maintenance and repair of other district vehicles and equipment, as needed.

Repair, inspect, and maintain tires and rims; ensure accurate maintenance records.

Conduct complete vehicle safety inspections as required by regulation.

Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed for assigned tasks.

Operate district vehicles as necessary.

Replace and adjust brakes, belts, hoses, and related components.

Write parts requisitions, place orders, and ensure timely receipt of materials.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Shop Foreman or management.



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Possess and maintain the personal hand tools required for the job.

Conduct routine diagnostics and testing of vehicle systems.

Maintain detailed records of services, inspections, and repairs.

Schedule and coordinate safety inspections and ongoing maintenance.

Comply with all Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

Perform physically demanding work in a variety of weather and shop conditions.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Certification:

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Valid Journeyman Automotive Service Technician Certificate

Additional related certifications are considered an asset.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience in the repair and preventative maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles.

Experience with school buses, diesel engines, and air brake systems is strongly preferred.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

Automotive repair shop practices, including welding and workplace safety standards.

Mechanics of gas, propane and diesel engines, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, and diagnostic tools.

Preventative maintenance procedures applicable to school bus operations.

Reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and parts catalogs.

Local and provincial codes and regulations related to vehicle safety and maintenance.

Safe operation of vehicles and mechanical equipment.

Ability to:

  • Safely and effectively use tools and equipment required for maintenance and repair.



  • Understand, follow, and provide verbal and written instructions.



  • Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.



  • Perform heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 75 pounds.



  • Read and interpret technical documentation, laws, and policies.



  • Maintain accurate and complete service records.



  • Adapt to changing priorities and respond effectively to urgent situations.



  • Foster respectful and cooperative working relationships.



  • Exercise sound judgment and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.



  • 10. Perform responsible mechanical repair work with minimal supervision.



    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    Environment:

    Indoor/outdoor setting, subject to extreme temperatures (ranging from -40°C to +30°C).

    Frequent exposure to fumes, noise, dust, oil, and exhaust.

    Work around and operate heavy machinery and motorized equipment.

    Possible interruptions and shifting work priorities.

    Physical Requirements:

    Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and crouching.

    Lifting, pushing, and pulling objects up to 75 lbs.

    Use of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment.

    Crawling under vehicles and working in tight or awkward positions.

    Visual and auditory acuity required for diagnostics and communication.

    Ability to drive vehicles as required.
