As a Capital Markets Operations intern at National Bank, you will work as an operations assistant, contributing to the development and execution of the capital markets and wealth management business strategy. Thanks to your attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to collaborate with several business units at the heart of the capital markets, this internship allows you to have a tangible impact.

Your role

  • Depending on the team, you may be required to:
  • Ensure the accurate representation of financial transactions carried out by currency traders in various internal systems.
  • Contribute to the diligent review of counterparty documentation files to support high compliance standards.
  • Ensure the accuracy, stability, and smooth operation of revenue-related transactions (e.g., interest, dividends, and fixed income) in the Canadian and U.S. markets.
  • Support transaction settlement activities by verifying execution, following operational instructions, and assisting with the daily management of cash and collateral.
  • Analyze settlement delays or failures and collaborate with the team on continuous process improvement.
  • Update and optimize existing processes and procedures to increase efficiency and automation.

The Capital Markets Operations (CMO) team consists of nearly 500 specialists who work in an agile, proactive, and collaborative manner to be a competitive advantage, catalyze growth, and contribute to revenue.

Four sectors are ready to welcome an intern:

Over-the-Counter (OTC)

This team contributes to every stage of a transaction's life cycle. They play an essential role in documenting and reviewing legal confirmations, representing positions in various systems, settling with clients, managing margin calls, and disclosing information to regulatory authorities. The team's contribution to Capital Markets is vital in mitigating numerous operational, financial, reputational, and regulatory risks.

Cross-functional Activities

They bring together three teams that work together to ensure alignment, consistency, and operational efficiency.

The Counterparty Documentation Center (CDC) conducts diligent reviews of counterparty documentation according to AML/KYC standards. This directly contributes to compliance and the soundness of capital market operations.

The Market Parameters team (PDM) manages data relating to traded securities to ensure their quality, consistency, and compliance.

The Reconciliation team analyzes transaction data to identify and resolve discrepancies. The scope of its analysis covers a variety of financial products, including futures, equities, bonds, options, foreign exchange (FX), derivatives, and cash balances.

Income and Corporate Action

This team manages all income, including interest, dividends, fixed income, GICs, and DRIPs, as well as various Canadian, U.S., and international market events. The team ensures the quality of transmitted information and partner satisfaction.

Transaction Settlement

This team contributes to the settlement of transactions by verifying their execution and supporting cash, collateral, and intraday operations management. The team also analyzes settlement delays or failures and ensures that custodians follow instructions and meet transaction deadlines.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or master's program.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in capital markets and the financial sector.
  • Show great attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.
  • Be proficient in artificial intelligence tools (low code, no code).
  • Have an excellent academic record.
  • Have relevant experience in analysis or extracurricular activities related to the financial field.
