A career as the Associate Vice President of Corporate Sustainability within the Finance team at National Bank means acting as a sustainability strategist to oversee the Bank’s sustainability ambition and strategy, and guide sustainability-related initiatives across the organization.

This role gives you the opportunity to make a positive impact through your leadership, your expertise in governance and sustainability strategy, and your ability to collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. You’ll be at the heart of the evolution of the Bank’s sustainability program by helping establish robust governance mechanisms, aligning ESG commitments with international regulatory standards, and represent National Bank externally through communicating our strategy, ambition, and progress to investors, business partners, regulators, and the public. This strategic position acts as a catalyst for innovation and provides leadership to the integration of sustainability principles across all functions, business lines and geographies at the Bank. 

Your role

  • Assess the Bank’s sustainability strategy based on an evaluation of risks, opportunities, and issues, and oversee the implementation of enhancements
  • Align the sustainability strategy with the Bank’s long-term planning, operational plans, budgets, and internal processes
  • Lead the development of the climate transition plan and implement in collaboration with business line and operational leaders
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to ESG-related targets. Establish KPIs to track performance and progress against the targets, and support internal partners in developing action plans to achieve targets
  • Oversee ESG disclosures, including integrated and standalone reports, ensuring alignment with standards (ISSB, CSRD, PRB, etc.)
  • Ensure ownership and responsibility of the communications strategy for the Bank’s sustainability ambition and commitments
  • Lead the ESG data strategy, including audit processes, platforms, controls, and third-party data governance
  • Be a key member of the Bank’s ESG committee, supporting its chair to ensure mandate compliance
  • Review current corporate sustainability governance, and recommend opportunities for improvement
  • Be the key leader that represents the Bank from a sustainability perspective in working groups, industry events, and meetings with shareholders, NGOs, rating agencies, and regulators
  • Promote the sharing of best practices and build strategic external partnerships
  • Oversee internal employee engagement and training programs related to sustainability

Your team

The Corporate Sustainability team in the Finance sector includes a talented, multi-locational team of experienced specialists working in an agile, proactive, and collaborative way to support the Bank’s strategic direction. 

Within this sector, you’ll join a team committed to long-term value creation and report directly to senior management, Matthew Rudd and Eve-Marie Durocher. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for implementing the ESG strategy, including disclosure, governance, training, and data analysis. Prerequisites

  • Bachelor’s degree related to the sector and significant relevant experience. Relevant postgraduate degree or related certification (e.g. CFA, FSA, CSRD) is a plus
  • Deep understanding of the latest developments in sustainability, including sustainable finance products, governance best practices, relevant international agreements, and disclosure standards (ISSB, CSRD, PRB, TCFD, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of the banking industry and activities, including awareness of National Bank’s ESG commitments, and the regulatory environment is an asset
  • Ability to quickly assess, develop recommendations and respond to rapidly evolving risks and opportunities
  • Proven direct and indirect leadership abilities, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to cultivate support from key stakeholders (employees, senior executives, investors, regulators, partners)
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex risk concepts clearly to executive audiences
