What we need:

Working in an environment that promotes professional accountability and responsibility, the Pathologist Assistant is an integral part of the pathology team and works closely with the Pathologists to provide a high standard of patient care.  Under the direction of staff Pathologists your key technical responsibility will be the preparation, handling and selection of diagnostic tissues from surgical specimens which are submitted for examination. A summary of key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Grossing of surgical cases including complex cancer resections and selection for microscopic examination by Pathologist
  • Dictation via voice recognition technology
  • Use of tracking system
  • Participation in daily grossing rounds
  • Photography/annotation of gross specimens
  • Decalcification of bone specimens
  • Loading of Tissue Processors

 

Work Schedule:

The successful candidate will be required to work Days 7.5 hours, Evenings 3.75 hours and Weekends 3.75/7.5 hours.

Compensation:

Band OPSEU05: $42.24 - $53.28 per hour

 

 What you bring to this role:

  • Master of Science degree in a Pathologist Assistant Program and/or holding ASCP and/or CCCPA certification or equivalent required
  • A minimum of one year’s experience grossing surgical cases including complex cancer resections required
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy and gross pathology in normal and disease states required
  • Strong knowledge of dissection techniques required
  • Strong knowledge of medical and technical terminology required
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication , organizational and teamwork skills required
  • Ability to prioritize workload
  • Proficient computer skills and experience with an LIS system required
  • Knowledge of quality assurance an asset
  • Experience with voice dictation and tracking systems an asset
  • Demonstrated good attendance record with the ability to maintain this same standard
  • Demonstrated commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required
