Regional AVP Tax, Retirement & Estate Planning plays a key role with Individual Insurance’s sales and distribution process by working with both the sales team and life insurance advisors to develop cases, implement sophisticated product structures and educate insurance advisors on the tax and estate planning opportunities available with life insurance.

This position reports to the Head of Tax, Retirement and Estate Planning Services. The Regional AVP Tax, Retirement & Estate Planning will be part of a team of seven highly motivated professionals who are highly respected within the organization and industry.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide case-specific consultative expertise working with select insurance advisors to clients and client professional advisors working in conjunction with Manulife Regional Insurance Sales teams

  • Implement sophisticated product solutions involving tax and estate planning opportunities

  • Provide education to insurance advisors regarding tax and estate planning opportunities utilizing insurance products

  • Build local relationships with professional advisors through case-specific interaction and more generally through the provision of education regarding insurance product application to complex tax, estate and business planning strategies

  • Assist insurance advisors, Manulife Insurance Sales teams and other Manulife staff in preparing proposals, presentations and customized numerical analysis for affluent/upscale individuals and business clients involving complex estate, tax and business planning

  • Provide federal and provincial tax information, legal/accounting information and interpretation to assist/facilitate the development of sales strategies, programs and concepts in order to create new market opportunities and to increase sales results in existing affluent/upscale and business markets

  • Be involved in industry organizations such as the Association de Planification Fiscale et Financière and Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners

  • Further the Tax, Retirement & Estate Planning team’s Thought Leadership through Industry & Professional Association involvement, technical publications and other medium (podcasts/videos)

  • Reviewing French translation of Manulife TREPS publications

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Some Quebec region travel required. Incumbent will be required to remain current on relevant tax and regulatory matters.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong tax and estate planning analytical skills and reasoning with expertise in the taxation of private companies and their shareholders, trusts and estate planning

  • Bilingual - French and English

  • Ability to apply specialized knowledge to practically implement planning solutions

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal skills, relationship building and management

  • Creative/innovative thinking applied to individual client contexts

  • Ability to interpret and communicate technical information to a non-technical audience

  • Accuracy and attention to detail

  • Team player and positive attitude

  • Professional degree/designation (CPA, LLB, LLM (Tax))

  • Completion of the CICA In Depth Tax Course or similar course of study

  • Expertise in personal, estates and corporate tax gained through relevant accounting, legal or financial services experience (7 years minimum)

  • The successful candidate will be required to communicate in English and French to support clients from various provinces outside of Québec.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in the Life insurance or Financial Services industry

  • Expertise in the taxation of Life insurance products

  • TEP, Pl. Fin, CLU designation
