Deputy Returning Officer (Poll Clerk)

The work of a Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) is more than a task - it is a calling to serve our neighbours in truth, fairness, and respect. In the 2025 Trustee Election, DROs will help ensure that every voice is heard and every ballot is handled with care.

Position Overview:

A Deputy Returning Officer is an election worker who assists voters at a polling station under the guidance of the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer. This role safeguards the integrity of the election while extending courtesy and hospitality to all who come to vote.

This position works under the supervision and direction of the Returning Officer (Secretary Treasurer) for the Lakeland Catholic School Division.

Key Dates:

Training Session : Early October 2025 (half-day; date confirmed after hiring)

Election Day : October 20, 2025 (full day; from 9:00 a.m. until counting is complete)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in mandatory training hosted by the Returning Officer before Election Day.

  • Arrive early to help prepare the polling station, ensuring it is welcoming, orderly, and ready to serve.

  • Protect the security of ballots, ballot boxes, and voting booths.

  • Greet voters warmly, administer oaths and declarations, and guide them through the voting process.

  • Maintain a peaceful and respectful environment for all.

  • Assist in counting ballots at the end of the day.

  • Work in unity with other election staff, treating each person with dignity.

Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years of age on Election Day and eligible to work in Canada.

  • Patience, tact, and a respectful approach in all interactions.

  • Clear communication skills to assist and guide voters.

  • A commitment to confidentiality and to the sacred trust placed in election workers.

Remuneration:

  • Wages: $250/day

  • Training: $150/day

  • Mileage: $0.55/km
