The successful candidate will work with a portfolio of small to mid-market commercial risks while building strong relationships with brokers and contributing to the growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new business submissions and renewals across a range of commercial risks
  • Evaluate risks, exposures, and underwriting information to make sound underwriting decisions
  • Manage approximately 20-30 renewals per month, along with new business submissions
  • Work with commercial risks up to approximately $3M TIV and $5M liability
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers
  • Proactively communicate with brokers to understand opportunities and reasons behind lost business
  • Collaborate with the Business Development team to support growth initiatives
  • Provide underwriting guidance and support to brokers
  • Participate in occasional industry and client events
  • For Senior-level candidates, provide mentorship and training support to junior team members

Lines of Business
Strong experience in at least two commercial lines is preferred, including:

  • Commercial Property
  • Casualty / CGL
  • Motor Truck
  • Cargo
  • Transportation

Experience with Professional Liability or Medical Malpractice is an asset, although training can be provided for candidates with strong commercial underwriting fundamentals.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of Commercial Underwriting experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of commercial underwriting principles
  • Experience handling small to mid-market commercial risks
  • Experience across multiple commercial lines
  • Comfortable managing both new business and renewals
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Comfortable proactively engaging with brokers and picking up the phone
  • Commercially minded with an interest in contributing to business growth
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the broader team
  • Ability to work in the Toronto office every Tuesday and Wednesday

Strong Assests Include

  • Property and CGL/Casualty experience
  • Transportation, Motor Truck, or Cargo experience
  • Major carrier experience, particularly Intact or Aviva
  • MGA or Lloyd’s experience
  • Established broker relationships
  • Interest in Business Development

Compensation & Benefits

  • $80,000-$100,000 base salary
    • Intermediate: approximately $80,000-$90,000
    • Senior: approximately $90,000-$100,000
  • 5 personal days
  • Paid birthday day off
  • Pension plan with 2.5% employee and 2.5% employer contributions
  • Vacation based on insurance experience
  • Professional development and AP course reimbursement, subject to approval
  • Annual performance and salary reviews

Work Environment
The organization offers a small, collaborative, and family-oriented environment with direct access to leadership and a strong emphasis on employee support and work-life balance.

The team values individuals who are proactive, relationship-oriented, collaborative, and genuinely interested in helping the organization grow. This is not a purely desk-based underwriting position-the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build broker relationships, support new business, and contribute to the broader commercial strategy.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Join a collaborative and supportive MGA environment
  • Work with a diverse range of commercial risks rather than one specialized niche
  • Build meaningful broker relationships
  • Combine technical underwriting with business development
  • Strong work-life balance and flexible hybrid model
  • Opportunities for professional development and long-term career growth
