Director of Finance

Our client is a well-established and highly respected non-profit organisation based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, dedicated to supporting and empowering vulnerable women and children living in extreme poverty. Through drop-in centres and emergency shelters, they provide essential services and specialized support to over 1,000 individuals daily. This is a mission-driven organisation with deep community roots and a strong commitment to social justice, equity, and long-term positive impact.

About the Role
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the organisation - both at a day-to-day and strategic level. You will be an active member of the leadership team, working closely with the Board of Directors and Finance Committee to ensure financial integrity, compliance, and accountability across all programs and funding streams. You will also oversee and support the Manager of Finance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead month-end, year-end, and audit processes, liaising with external auditors and ensuring timely delivery of all required documentation
  • Prepare the annual Operational Budget for Board approval and maintain multiple program budgets with variance reporting
  • Complete financial reports as required by funding agencies, contribution agreements, and grant requirements
  • Support the Fund Development Team and Program Managers in developing budgets for program proposals and work plans
  • Oversee tax compliance including GST, charity returns, and CRA filings specific to charitable organisations
  • Develop and oversee payroll processes, ensuring accuracy prior to submission
  • Manage relationships with banking and investment partners
  • Administer Group Benefits and Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) contributions in collaboration with HR
  • Provide financial leadership on building leases, capital improvement projects, and equipment agreements
  • Supervise and support the Bookkeeper to ensure services are delivered in accordance with established financial practices
  • Develop Board and staff training opportunities related to organisational finances

Requirements

  • CPA designation with 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a leadership role
  • Minimum 2 years of accounting experience within a non-profit or charitable organisation
  • Experience handling government contracts and fluency in CRA guidelines specific to charities, grants, donations, and fundraising
  • Strong knowledge of varied revenue streams including grant funding and provincial/federal restricted funds
  • Proficiency across accounting systems with a willingness to adopt new software
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess and manage risk
  • Working knowledge of issues impacting women in the DTES including gender-based violence, mental health, homelessness, and addictions
  • Ability to work within a feminist analysis and anti-oppression framework
  • Conflict resolution skills and crisis intervention experience
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment serving a diverse community
  • Valid First Aid certificate required; criminal record check required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $90,000 - $113,000 based on experience

  • Vacation: 3 weeks in year one, increasing to 4 weeks after 1 year | 12 statutory holidays | 12 paid sick days annually
