Job Description: Promotes the healthy and home program with mothers and hospital staff. Assists with preparing mothers from hospital to the community. Completes kids first universal screening of all clients who deliver at royal university hospital - includes one to one interviews. Assesses clients as per nursing guidelines and individualizes care plan to meet client needs. Reports and/or refers to physician based on client need and/or test results. Provides nursing care and interventions and teaches and reinforces care activities for the mother and infant in the home. Assists with client referral to community health nurse at time of discharge from the program. Serves as an expert clinical resource for staff members, clients/families, students and interdisciplinary team members as required. Demonstrates normal positioning techniques for mother and baby as well as identifies possible conditions or problems requiring intervention. Educates parents on infant feeding.

Experience

  • Five (5) years experience in acute care postpartum nursing required

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Licenses

  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Certificate (IBCLC)

Other Education and Training

  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)

Competencies

  • Basic - Communication skills

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge in the SHA, community resources and applicable programming
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work and communicate in a cross cultural setting
