Job Description: The Emergency Psych. Nurse Coordinator, under direction of the Inpatient Mental Health Manager, exercises independence in the provision of individualized assessment/care to patients in the ER w/ mental health &/or chemical dependency problems. The Coordinator works closely w/ ER physicians, on-call psychiatrists, Mental Health Unit, Community Mental Health & Addiction Services, other SHA & community stakeholders to develop/deliver high quality services. The incumbent provides patient & family education/support while the patient is in the emergency department & acts as a role model/clinical resource. The Coordinator is responsible for caregiver policy/procedures dev’t such as clinical pathways. The incumbent is responsible to lead others through the dev’t of a long-term vision for this position through research, dev’t, coordination & evaluation. This nurse is expected to work as a part of the emergency service team in providing care to other patients in the emergency department.

Experience
- Expert in assess.,diagnosis &treatment of major mental health & addiction issues
- Minimum of three years recent experience in inpatient mental health services
Education
- Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN)
Other Education and Training
- Psychiatric Nursing diploma is acceptable
- Nursing diploma is acceptable
- Current registration w/ Registered Psych. Nursing Assoc. of SK (RPNAS) required
- Bachelor of Nursing is acceptable
- Current PART and CPR certification
Knowledge and Abilities
- Demonstrated competency in psychiatric mental health assessment
- Works independently, effectively and cooperatively with a multidisciplinary team
- Assertive &self-directed in developing plans & referrals for patients & families
- Knowledge in Mental Health and Addictions
- Knowledge of comm. resources to pts. with psycho/social & chemical dependency
- Knowledge and practical application of the Mental Health Services Act
- Knowledge of and experience with chemical dependency
- Working knowledge of the Saskatchewan Alcohol & Drug Services Program guidelines
- Ability to problem solve with minimal supervision
- Communicates effectively with patients and families
- Demonstrated knowledge of crisis assessment and intervention
- Working knowledge of the Mental Health Services Act
- Works well as a team member & mentor, strong leadership & interpersonal skills
