Job Description: The Addiction Counsellor will primarily be responsible for supporting individuals that present with substance use and/or substance use related mental health issues in the emergency department. They will be required to assess an individual's needs and developing a treatment plan. This may include short term counselling and/or referrals to longer term resources and they may need to case manage the coordination of stabilization services to enhance a successful referral to ongoing services. The Addiction Counsellor must be able to recognize the elements of a client in crisis and implement immediate action appropriate to the crisis. This may include assessing for risk of suicide and developing a safety plan. They need to maintain a working knowledge of MHAS internal departments and services, and community resources including the ability to collaborate with and make referrals.

Education
- Diploma or Degree in Chemical Dependency studies or BSW and/or another Baccalaureate discipline (generally social sciences or human services) acceptable to the employer.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- Knowledge of MHAIS and SCM.
- Knowledge of MHAS and SHA philosophy and objectives.
- Knowledge of Transtheoretical Model, motivational interviewing and the Saskatchewan Model of recovery.
- Aware of and understands the Mental Health Services Act and the Youth Drug Detoxification and Stabilization Act.
- Sound knowledge of addictions, integrated human service delivery systems, community programs and supports.
- Client-centered screening, assessment and recovery planning experience with adults and families.
- Ability to be self-directed, creative, collaborative and to have sound judgment.
- Possess effective communication skills conducive to establishing healthy relationships with client and agencies; ability to present, develop concise and accurate written information (file documentation).
- Demonstrated written and intermediate computer skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to engage with diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Must possess and maintain valid Saskatchewan Driver's license and be insurable.
- Requires a working knowledge of: substance abuse/addiction issues, mental health issues, family systems, case management principles and the ability to integrate this knowledge and implement strategies that will support healthy lifestyles/living.
- Requires recovery planning, collaboration, counselling, communication and leadership skills.
