Description:

The Itinerant Educational Assistant - Blind and Low Vision, within Student Support Services provides accessibility, and technological support for students with blindness or low vision across multiple school sites, travelling to elementary and secondary schools where needed. The EA ensures that students with visual impairments have equitable access to curriculum, learning materials, and assistive technology.

Details of Function:

The Educational Assistant - Blind and Low Vision will:

  • Provide direct support services for students who are blind or have low vision;
  • deliver blind and low vision Expanded Core curriculum;
  • support the development of vision substitution skills - abacus, UEB Braille and assistive technology;
  • promote and facilitate the use of best educational practices and procedures for students who are blind or have low vision;
  • assist school personnel with implementation of Individual Education Plans for students who are blind or have low vision, including supporting the preparation of required materials;
  • present new teaching strategies and learning materials for students who are blind or have low vision;
  • develop and provide professional development workshops, including and not limited to Principals/Vice-Principals/Principal Assistants/Interns, Classroom/Subject Teachers, Special Education Resource Teachers, Educational Assistants, parents/guardians and community professionals/para-professionals on the education of students who are blind or have low vision;
  • provide and/or facilitate adult learning and training which may include coaching, modeling and capacity building; and,
  • participate in professional development in-services.
Qualifications:
  • Educational Assistant (EA) qualification or equivalent;
  • Foundational skills in Unified English Braille (UEB) (can be obtained through the following link
  • Proficiency using assistive technology tools (iPad/MacBook, Office 365, Office Lens, Voice Dream Reader & Writer, Talking Typer); and,
  • Reliable vehicle to travel between sites.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
  • Certification in UEB Braille (uncontracted or contracted, with an interest in pursuing certification in UEB Contracted Braille, including Science and Math code);
  • Proficiency in transcribing, proofreading and formatting of UEB Braille;
  • Knowledge of adaptive technology for low vision (e.g., CCTVs, e-readers, text-to-voice output, print-to-Braille output);
  • Proficiency using Adaptive Equipment for students who are blind or visually impaired, such as CCTVs, e-readers, text to voice output, and print to UEB braille output;
  • Familiarity with CVI and other neurological visual disorders, ability to create/adapt accessible learning materials, and understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles;
  • Experience supporting literacy through braille and implementing IEP Expanded Core Curriculum goals;
  • Experience providing and/or facilitating adult learning and training which may include coaching; modeling and capacity building;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and documentation skills;
  • Flexibility regarding schedule within a 7-hour work day; and

Working out of the Nicholas Mancini Centre (Student Support Services) 44 Hunt St., Hamilton

Salary:

CUPE Category 6 ($29.00-$32.17) Paid mileage for travel between sites

Hours of work: Monday to Friday
