Nurse Practitioner - Newborn Care & Neonatal Complex Care

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) - Newborn Care & Neonatal Complex Care is a key clinical leader and critical member of a dynamic provider team that includes Family Physicians, Midwives, Pediatricians, Neonatologists, Neonatal Fellows and Physician Assistants.  This unique role will work very closely and collaboratively with a large extended interdisciplinary team to manage a variety of newborn care needs across a broad spectrum of acuity and complexity; and will have dual responsibility for collaborative newborn care management on unit 4C - Postpartum as well as the NICU with a specific focus on neonatal complex care and discharge planning.  The role will fulfill all domains of NP practice including education, research, quality improvement, and leadership - with a range of opportunities to become directly involved in each of these areas.  This role is eligible for clinical cross-appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at McMaster University.  The orientation and training program is tailored to meet individual learning and development needs, taking into account prior experience and preparation. 

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class

2. Advanced preparation at the Masters level with specialized training in neonatology or pediatrics

3. Current NRP certification

4. Current BCLS certification

5. Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in a Level III NICU preferred

6. Advanced knowledge of preterm and full-term infant pathophysiology

7. Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act

8. Knowledge of trauma-informed care and supporting families prenatally, during the birth process, and in crisis/stressful situations in a critical care setting

9. Strong critical analysis, problem-solving and assessment skills to formulate medical and nursing diagnoses

10. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

11. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with members of a diverse inter-professional healthcare team to provide and promote patient centered care in a fast-paced, dynamic and clinically complex environment
