The Director of Operations is responsible for the full operational leadership of a high-volume, warehouse and sorting operation employing approximately 750 employees. This role will drive cost-per-unit performance, productivity, labour efficiency, and operational consistency, while ensuring safety, compliance, and service delivery standards are achieved. The Director of Operations will lead all aspects of execution, including workforce performance in a unit-based pay environment, and will be accountable for optimizing throughput, controlling labour costs, and scaling operations in line with business growth.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership

  • Lead day-to-day operations across warehouse/sorting facilities
  • Ensure consistent execution of production targets, service levels, and throughput goals.
  • Develop and implement standardized operating procedures across all operations.
  • Drive accountability at Director, Manager, and Supervisor levels

Cost-Per-Unit & Productivity Management

  • Own and continuously improve cost-per-unit metrics
  • Optimize labour productivity in a pay-per-unit compensation model
  • Establish measurable KPIs, including:
    • Units processed per hour
    • Labour cost per unit
    • Productivity per employee
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement corrective actions quickly


Labour & Workforce Management

  • Oversee a workforce of 750 employees in a fast-paced environment
  • Build a performance-driven culture aligned with productivity-based compensation
  • Ensure proper workforce planning, staffing levels, and scheduling
  • Partner with HR on:
    • High-volume recruitment strategies
    • Discipline and performance management
    • Retention and workforce stability
  • Navigate labour relations, including union considerations if applicable


Finance & P&L Accountability

  • Own full operational budgets and cost control
  • Monitor and manage:
    • Labour costs
    • Overtime
    • Productivity variances
  • Deliver continuous cost improvement initiatives tied to operational efficiency
  • Partner with finance on forecasting and performance tracking


Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all provincial regulations (e.g., CNESST in Quebec)
  • Promote a strong safety culture across all operations
  • Reduce workplace incidents through proactive safety programs
  • Ensure proper documentation, audits, and risk mitigation

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve:
    • Throughput
    • Workflow design
    • Line efficiency
  • Implement Lean / process improvement initiatives
  • Drive automation, where applicable, to support scale

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Cost per unit (primary metric)
  • Units processed per hour / shift
  • Labour productivity (output per employee)
  • Overtime % and labour cost variance
  • Fill rate / staffing levels
  • Safety metrics (incident rate, lost-time incidents)
  • Employee turnover and retention


Experience

  • 10–15+ years in operations leadership
  • Experience managing large-scale workforce (500–1,500+ employees)
  • Strong background in:
    • Warehouse / logistics / manufacturing / sorting environments
    • High-volume, labour-intensive operations
  • Proven success managing multi-site operations

Technical & Leadership Skills

  • Strong understanding of labour productivity models (including incentive pay / piece-rate systems)
  • Bilingual (English / French)
  • Demonstrated ability to improve cost-per-unit performance
  • Excellent leadership and team development capabilities
  • Experience working with HR on labour relations and discipline
  • Strong financial acumen (budgeting, cost control, P&L)
