Description
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Power Systems Engineer is responsible for the integrity of the mill wide electrical systems, focusing on the maintenance and reliability of the power distribution system and all major assets.
This complex role works collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering departments on major maintenance programs to ensure power system efficiency and reliability, while also reviewing capital projects to align with mill standards and policies are adhered to. The position requires a detail-oriented professional with thorough knowledge of high voltage, turbine generation systems, distribution and control system processes, to maintain reliability in day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the reliability and maintenance of our mill power systems including:
- Mill power distribution including grid inter-connections with BC Hydro
- Main substation transformers, area transformers, power distribution centers, and motor control centers
- Steam turbine-generators and load shedding scheme
- Motor relay protection
- Electrical safety programs including arc flash studies, high voltage training, PPE.
- Maintains expertise in mill electrical systems, new technologies and acts as a troubleshooting resource for machine drives, variable frequency drives, DC drives, turbines, substation switching and voltage controls.
- Evaluate work to ensure design concepts, calculations, process, safety and environmental requirements are met.
- Directs and coordinates work with external consultants.
- Has active input into the optimization process with the overall objective of improving safety, reliability, production and quality, while reducing costs.
- Ensure completion of all necessary documentation on assigned tasks, including but not limited to, equipment records, drawing updates, flow sheet revisions, etc.
- Ensure safety and compliance accountabilities to BC Hydro, BCUC, CSA and WorksafeBC rules and regulations, and Canadian Electrical Code Standards/Regulations.
Qualifications:
- Licensed Electrical Engineer (P.Eng) - Registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
- 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, specializing in industrial and power generation projects.
- Expertise in Pulp Technology - In-depth knowledge of pulp operations, production methods, and electrical systems integration.
- Technical leadership in multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring efficient electrical design and implementation.
- Proficient in software tools - Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, and 3D design/drafting techniques.
- Strong communication skills - Effective in both written and verbal communication.
- Proven leadership and negotiation abilities
- Skilled in managing dynamic team environments and vendor interactions
- PMP designation is considered an asset
