Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Surveys and Inspections, the Instrument Person is responsible to use various survey instruments to assist the Party Chief in the day to day activities in the in the performance ofvarious types of civil construction layout and topographic data collection as described in the duties andresponsibilities below.
- Perform topographic and pre-engineering surveys; process and edit data used in the preparation of base construction plans.
- Assists the Party Chief in managing all site-specific surveying activities including providing layout for construction of municipal infrastructure on roadways and other City owned lands to ensure associated appurtenances are constructed in the desired locations.
- Assists in gathering and recording as-constructed measurements, records, and drawings used in the preparation of monthly progress and final payments subject to prescribed City audit standards.
- Assists in checking and auditing contractor work for completeness, accuracy and compliance with City standards.
- Assists in conducting surveys in order to establish legal boundaries for properties based on legal deeds and titles.
- Assists in verifying the accuracy of all survey work performed, data collected, calculations, measurements, field notes, grade sheets, etc.
- Helps identify and report site/project issues and present alternatives to facilitate resolutions.
- Organize equipment and supplies and ensure all equipment is accounted for and maintained in good working order.
- Work in a safe and secure manner in work in accordance with the OHSA, other legislated safety requirements,and City policies.
- May be required to provide back-up to run a survey crew in absence of the Party Chief.
- Liaise with the general public, inspectors, contractors, consultants, utilities, City staff and other stakeholders.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, which may include temporary on-call re-assignment during the winterperiod to assist in Winter Maintenance operations.
- The potential for Aerial/Drone Survey work
• Able to complete all duties and responsibilities listed above.
• Requires the successful completion of a Civil, Surveying, or Geomatics Engineering Technology Program.
• Must have C.Tech or C.E.T. designation with OACETT.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in municipal civil construction
• Experience with topographic surveys, construction layout, and cadastral surveys is required.
• Experienced in all aspects of horizontal/vertical control surveys.
• Sound knowledge of current construction practices and procedures.
• Proficient in the use of all survey instruments including Total Stations, GPS, data recorders, and optic levels.
• Experienced using automated office technology to download, edit, and process information from surveyequipment.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations and produce detailed, legible and accurate field survey notes.
• Must be able to read and interpret all types of municipal engineering drawings, contract documents,specifications and construction standards.
• Must act with integrity and demonstrate sound moral and ethical principles.

• Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to effectively deal with residents, contractors,other outside agencies and stakeholders.

• Knowledge of the content and use of the Ontario Provincial Standards & Specifications (OPSS), City of Mississauga Standards & Specifications, Health and Safety Act, Technical Standards and Safety Authority and OTMBook 7.
• Strong computer skills including good working knowledge of INFOR, Trimble Business Centre, AutoCAD,Microsoft Office, EDMS, iMaps, and GIS.
• Must hold a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence and a clean driving record acceptable to the City.
• Must be able to meet essential physical requirements of this position including lifting, pulling and carrying ofheavy equipment/objects, using hand tools, working outdoors in all weather conditions, exposure to asphalt,concrete and dust, etc.
• To advance to the interview stage, the applicant must achieve a score of 65% or above on a technical assessment.
Hourly Rate/Salary: 32.75 - 38.45
