Intern, Regulatory Operating Practices
This is a full-time summer internship lasting from May 11, 2026, until August 28, 2026.
Job SummaryThe intern will be responsible for collecting data from various sources within CN and will analyze how train makeup and ambient air temperature (cold weather in particular) affect CN’s ability to charge and maintain a pressurized train air brake system. The purpose of the research is to create business rules from previously operated trains for CN’s network operating center with respect to train builds (train length, number of railcars and number of air sources) during winter months, particularly when the train will experience ambient temperature below -25 degrees Celsius. This work will be used to help maintain CN’s network fluidity and customer service obligations.
Major Responsibilities Data collection and analysis· Collect data from various sources and organize it in Excel.
· Analyse data to identify relationships between train makeup, ambient temperature and CNs’ ability to maintain a pressurized train air brake system.
· Develop business rules with respect to train makeup and forecasted ambient temperature for winter months.
· Work with the network operating center to collect data on specific operational conditions.
Requirements· Experience with Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
· Knowledge of or interest in learning about train operations (train build) and train brake systems.
· Applies critical thinking
· Takes initiative
· Good communication skills (verbal and written)
Education· Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics.
