The senior counsel is a member of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group that supports the Canadian Personal and Commercial banking business line (Canadian P&C). He/she reports to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation and works in a complex and changing environment where legal, regulatory and reputational risks must be constantly considered.
The senior counsel will provide advice on civil and regulatory issues and complaints. He/ she will manage litigation in which the Canadian P&C team may be engaged. The senior counsel will also identify, prevent and mitigate legal, regulatory and reputational risks.
The counsel will draw upon advanced knowledge of the governing legislation and of the regulatory environment of the financial services industry. In addition, the counsel will, together with the broader legal team, balance risks and corporate objectives and will provide strong risk oversight. The senior counsel will strive to add value as an advisor, acknowledging BMO’s strategy and vision - to be the Bank that defines great customer experience.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide legal advice and counsel to Canadian P&C, having in mind BMO’s strategy and vision
- Identify risks and advise on legal and regulatory questions to prevent and mitigate risks as well as to protect our customer and our brand
- Actively manages litigation matters, worling in close collaboration with external counsel
- Exercise judgment on, provide recommendations and resolve complex legal, regulatory issues, sometimes in a short lapse of time
- Provide guidance and oversee satisfactory resolution of complex and sensitive complaints or issues, while being customer focused
- Apply expertise and think creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine
- Identify risks and recommends and/or implement changes in response to trends/significant risks.
- Manage actively diverse and complex litigation and regulatory matters relating to Canadian P&C
- Lead strategic initiatives
Qualifications:
- Minimum requirements are a Bachelor of Law and a license to practice law and admission to the bar of a Canadian province (in current and good standing) for at least 8 years
- Seasoned professional with a combination of education, experience and industry knowledge
- Experience and knowledge in any of these fields will be considered an asset :class action, banking, regulatory and fraud
- Sound judgment
- Strong negotiations skills
- Very good verbal & written communication skills
- Very strong analytical and problem solving skills; capacity to take a position
- Build effective relationships with internal/ external stakeholders
- Collaboration & team skills with a focus on cross-group collaboration and ability to relate at all levels

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.
Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
