The Litigation Law Clerk is a member of the Litigation Paralegal and Clerk Service team supporting the Canadian Personal and Commercial Banking group.
This role offers meaningful work that leverages litigation experience and an opportunity to evolve in a dynamic and collaborative work environment. The role requires the Litigation Law Clerk to work in a complex and fast changing environment where legal, regulatory, and reputational risks must be constantly considered.
The Litigation Law Clerk communicates and maintains relationships not only with the legal team and other colleagues within the Bank’s Legal & Regulatory Compliance group, but also with internal clients and external counsel.
Responsibilities
Triages inquiries received from external and internal stakeholders to a team of lawyers, paralegals and law clerks.
Responds to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders, as appropriate.
Responds to production and court orders (Mareva and Norwich orders), RFIs and other requests for information.
Coordinates settlement payments.
Conducts legal research and assists in preparing documentation and exhibits for court, administrative tribunals, boards and hearings.
Independently maintains and organizes bring-forward systems and assists with day-to-day file and practice management.
Supports internal reporting including updates of systems, preparation of reports and presentations.
Edits and formats documents such as correspondence, memos, agreements, reports, and litigation records and materials.
Performs other administrative tasks and support, as required.
Qualifications
5+ years of relevant work experience, specifically litigation as a focused area of specialization.
Law clerk diploma or certification from an Ontario Accredited Law Clerk Program.
Member, in good standing, of ILCO (or equivalent), preferred.
Key Competencies
Strong knowledge of rules for civil procedure in Ontario (Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal) and the Federal Court and the ability to determine rules and procedures of tribunals or courts in other jurisdictions across Canada.
Demonstrated familiarity with electronic court registries, e-filing and e-hearing platforms.
Strong problem-solving and resourcefulness using good decision making or judgment.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Technical competencies: Advanced use and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiar with Tymetrix (T360) and iManage systems is considered an asset.
Reliability, flexibility, and dependability are essential for this position.
Curiosity and an interest in expanding existing skill set as the team advocates for clients in a variety of venues and concerning a variety of challenges.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
