Unit Manager

The Stollery Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is a 69-bed unit supporting the high-risk obstetrical unit at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women as well as a very large geographical area serving out born babies and their families. The NICU program embraces a philosophy of family centered care that aims to meet the unique needs of each baby and their family. The program consists of a multi-disciplinary team working collaboratively to provide high quality care with a commitment to ongoing quality improvement.

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager and working as a member of the leadership team, the Unit Manager assists in effective planning and allocation of human and financial resources where they best support service objectives and quality care. This position participates in a collaborative approach to planning and decision making among key internal and external stakeholders, and serves as a role model for family centered care, respectful relationships and positive communication. The Unit Manager coordinates and provides leadership in the daily operations as well as in delivery of services including scheduling, recruitment, performance management and coaching, staff development, and various tasks related to human resources. Clinical responsibilities include collaboration with other team members around patient flow, bed allocation, staffing needs, and family engagement. The Unit Manager consults with various stakeholders including Workplace Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, and Facilities Maintenance and Engineering. The Unit Manager makes independent decisions and is frequently called upon to resolve complex and challenging issues. This position provides direct management to a large number of staff therefore organization, efficiency, and prioritization are all essential skills for this role.
