Description
The Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) is an acute care hospital in Northeast Calgary, offering both inpatient and outpatient services. With over 600 beds across Medical, Surgical, Pediatrics, Women’s Health, and Critical Care units, PLC is the designated Vascular Centre for Southern Alberta, Southwestern Saskatchewan, and Southeastern British Columbia. The Allied Health Department includes Rehabilitation and Spiritual Care professionals who work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team to deliver patient and family-centered care. As a Seating Technician, you will support patient mobility and comfort by designing, modifying, fabricating, assembling, and repairing custom and commercial wheelchair seating systems under the direction of the occupational therapist. You will create individualized seating solutions, complete wheelchair and equipment repairs, and maintain an organized and safe workspace. Additional responsibilities include tracking equipment, ordering supplies, maintaining inventory and documentation, and completing billing processes per departmental standards. Beyond technical duties, you will build relationships with seating vendors to stay informed about equipment and modifications, provide education and training to team members, and contribute to the development of the seating program at PLC to enhance patient care. This position also supports rehabilitation activities assigned by speech-language pathologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and/or recreation therapists as required. As the Seating Technician you will design, modify, fabricate, assemble and repair custom and commercial seating systems under the direction of the seating clinical team. You will also complete equipment/wheelchair repairs as needed and support the work of the area such as ordering equipment and supplies, equipment maintenance, keeping the area clean and completing any necessary paperwork for billing purposes.
Completion of Grade 12. Minimum of one year's experience in the area of seating and fabrication of custom seating.
Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program. Relevant therapy assistant experience in adult acute care within the last 3 years Ability to assist with client lifts and transfers, positioning, and basic ADL and IADL within the context of therapy program. A high level of physical effort is required related to clinical caseload. Job demands include frequent lifting, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching, walking and reaching while carrying loads of varying size and weights. May require longer periods of sitting and/or standing at times. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with members of the interdisciplinary team, patients and families in a dynamic health care setting. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, be self-directed and work independently Demonstrated flexibility, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills Brings a creative, patient and sensitive approach to daily work. Excellent organizational and time management skills to efficiently prioritize workload Intermediate computer skills e.g. Microsoft Office including excel and adobe Demonstrates behaviours consistent with the values of AHS - Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Safety.
Strong technical skills in fabrication, assembly, and repair of seating systems & wheelchairs. Experience in the following adult acute care areas preferred: Orthopedics, General Medicine, and Critical Care. - Experience providing interventions assigned by multiple rehabilitation disciplines (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology) Understanding of trauma informed care principles Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.
