Description
Reporting to the Unit Manager of the UAH Eating Disorders Program, the Mental Health Aide performs activities to meet the personal care needs and comforts of patients in accordance with their patient care plan and Hospital policies and procedures. Some duties of this position may include supporting patient care through assistance with hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation or safety needs; assisting clinical staff with facilitation of unit groups; accompanying patients as needed to support them during activities on and off site; escorting patients to varied facilities as identified by care team; supervising patients on unit to ensure safety is maintained and alerting protective services of any issues requiring support; assistance with quality improvement and patient care evaluation activities; and all other duties as assigned by the unit manager or their designate. As a Mental Health Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team to provide a welcoming and safe care environment. You will assist in the provision of direct patient/client care as delegated in a person-centered, recovery oriented and safe manner. In this position, you will assist and / or promote independence to patients/clients in completing activities of daily living as well as assisting other health professionals with providing treatments and observing and reporting relevant patient/client information to professional staff. You will assist new patients/clients and families with orientation, and assist in the general support of the work area.
Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.
Mental health aide certificate (or equivalent) is required. Working knowledge of HIA and FOIPP with regards to confidentiality is required.
The following certifications will be assets, though training will be made available to the successful candidate as needed: Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP); current non-violent crisis intervention (NCI/ NVCI); mental health first aid. Recent experience (past 1-2 years) working in a mental health or hospital setting, or working with young adults, is an asset.
