Description
Unit 4E4 is a 25‑bed pediatric inpatient unit providing care to patients up to 18 years of age. The unit supports a broad range of patient populations, including general pediatric medicine, neurology, nephrology, pulmonary/respiratory conditions, mental health, and overflow from other pediatric specialty services. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Pediatric Medicine 4E4 is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care in collaboration with the interprofessional healthcare team. Practice is guided by the policies and procedures of the University of Alberta Hospital and Stollery Children’s Hospital and is carried out to the full scope of practice as defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). The LPN demonstrates accountability for safe, ethical, and evidence‑informed care, while supporting patient- and family‑centered practice. The role contributes to clinical quality, continuity of care, and effective communication within the healthcare team. Opportunities for professional growth include participation in unit‑based safety and education initiatives, skill certification development, involvement in the unit quality council, and engagement in broader Alberta Health Services initiatives. Staff within the Medicine Program may be cross‑trained and floated to other pediatric inpatient units within the Stollery Children’s Hospital, based on operational need, individual competence, and skill set, to support safe patient care delivery.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Successfully pass the Stollery PEARS course (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization Course), completed in orientation. Successfully pass the Stollery Medication Administration exam. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrated initiative, accountability, problem-solving, organizational skills, and effective time management. Strong decision-making, assessment, and critical thinking skills. Ability to adapt and work within a fast-paced, and time-sensitive environment with competing responsibilities.
Experience with children with tracheostomies and medically fragile patient populations is considered an asset and preferred. Connect Care Training and experience consider an asset.
