This Temporary Full-Time Journeyperson Electrician position reports to the Manager of Engineering Services, Facilities Maintenance & Engineering, at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) site. The incumbent supports electrical maintenance and service activities within a large, complex acute-care healthcare environment comprising approximately 650,000 m². The position is offered for a defined term based on operational requirements. The incumbent performs all required journeyperson-level duties installation, testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of building electrical systems in accordance with the CEC, NBC, NFPA, applicable safety regulations, and HSS / AHS standards and practices. Responsibilities include supporting essential and non-essential electrical infrastructure such as power distribution, emergency generators, UPS systems, automatic doors, lighting, pneumatic tube and telelift systems, motors, controls and systems supporting clinical and facility operations. Upholds’ safety work practices and completes all training as required. Working collaboratively with other trades, contractors, engineers, and clinical stakeholders, the incumbent performs assigned electrical work to support continuous facility operations. Responsibilities include monitoring the performance of assigned systems, completing preventive and corrective maintenance, preparing technical documentation, accurately recording work activities in the maintenance management system (eFacilities), and providing technical support during renovation, inspection, and capital project activities. The incumbent works independently with minimal supervision, applies sound judgment in a safety-critical environment, and responds to planned and unplanned service demands. This position is available to Edmonton Zone as needed.

As an Electrician you will work in accordance with the accepted codes, standards, regulations and procedures. Under minimal supervision, the electrician performs a variety of highly skilled electrical maintenance and repairs of a complex nature requiring use of schematics, blue prints and specialized test equipment.

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Electrician Certificate with Red Seal from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. Must hold a valid Class 5 Alberta Operator's Licence.

A valid Alberta Journeyperson Electrician Certificate, Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson Electrician Certificate is required. A minimum of 5 years experience as a Journeyperson Electrician, including 3 years in building maintenance and 2 years in a complex healthcare environment, is required. Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, Alberta Building Code, Fire Alarm Code, and applicable safety regulations. Proven ability to implement preventive maintenance programs and prepare technical documentation, including feasibility reviews, cost estimates, and reports, and to order materials and supplies. Must be thoroughly familiar with the tools, equipment, and practices used in the electrical trade. Proficiency with Outlook, Word, and Excel is required. The incumbent must be able to work independently, manage competing priorities, respond promptly to service requests, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality in accordance with organizational policy while functioning effectively in an interdisciplinary healthcare environment. The role requires the ability to lift or move heavy materials or equipment; work in awkward positions; work on ladders for extended periods; work in hot, dirty, or confined environments; and perform tasks involving sitting, bending, kneeling, and crouching without limitation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to meet all organizational policy requirements for employment are required.

Experience in an acute care hospital maintenance environment is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work effectively under emergency conditions and in challenging situations is considered an asset. Possession of a Master Electrician Certificate is an asset. Experience with medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems, main distribution breakers is preferred. Availability to work a variety of shift schedules, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, is considered an asset.
