An important facet of Air Canada’s corporate oversight and governance activities, the Enterprise Risk Management (“ERM”) program aims to provide timely and meaningful insight to both Management and the Board’s Audit, Finance and Risk Committee to assist in the identification, evaluation and understanding of the Company’s important business risks, adequacy of risk management strategies in place and whether the level of risk to the organization is within its tolerance levels.
The Principal, Enterprise Risk Management will champion ERM efforts across the Organization. This includes playing a critical role in the Company’s ERM reporting process, in identifying and evaluating the key risks to the Company’s business objectives, providing business advisory support, and providing insight to the broader Corporate Audit & Advisory (“CAA”) leadership team for the establishment of its risk-based audit plan.
We are looking for a highly motivated person in Montreal (YUL), Toronto (YYZ), or Winnipeg (YWG).
Responsibilities:
The position requires the individual to manage and continuously evaluate and enhance the following functions of the Corporate Audit & Advisory’s ERM practice:
Program oversight and maintenance
- Work closely with business units (including those responsible for oversight) across the Company to ensure consistency, alignment, and timely sharing of information.
- Refine internal ERM approach including how risk information is captured, analyzed, measured, and ultimately reported (including process, tools and technology).
- Ensure internal policies, methodologies and frameworks are in place and relevant in the Company’s operating model and organization structure.
- Ensure program procedures, materials and documentation remain current and relevant stakeholders are aware of changes.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of the Corporate risk register.
- Promote ERM maturity through innovative methods, new technologies, and processes including artificial intelligence.
Risk Analysis / Emerging Risk Analysis
- Identify, evaluate, and summarize key risks / emerging risks using business and related risk insight from established operational risk processes, management business forums/committees/working groups and directly from key members of our senior management team.
- Develop and analyze performance and risk indicators to assist in measuring risk to the Organization.
- Lead the execution of in-depth risk studies and reviews for the purpose of evaluating the exposure to the Company and effectiveness of mitigation strategies in place.
- Conduct and facilitate branch level risk assessments in collaboration with branch leadership over emerging risks, projects, changes in people, process and technology.
- Manage and coordinate outlook analysis / scenarios analysis.
- Select, oversee, and collaborate with 3rd party experts, when required.
Reporting
- Prepare quarterly ERM update to the Board of Director’s Audit, Finance and Risk Committee.
- Ensure alignment with other risk reporting processes (including quarterly / annual disclosures, ESG).
Communications
- Exhibit and model highly developed communication skills that foster collaboration with colleagues and builds trust with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Develop presentations, reference materials for use by the business.
- Conduct periodic education and awareness sessions on the importance of risk management and insight into the Company’s enterprise risks (communications, lunch and learns, awareness sessions, presentations).
Collaborate with Internal Audit Practice
- Support both the risk-based assurance and compliance assurance practices in the development of their respective plans, oversight and reporting. Maintain process to integrate audit outputs for use in risk measurement and analysis work and provide current and emerging risk insight to the Internal Audit practice for consideration in their work and development of the annual audit plan.
- Support the annual audit plan in the execution and facilitation of risk-based deliverables including planning, execution and reporting
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with specialized degree, certificate or designation completed or in progress given preference (e.g., RIMS-CRMP, CRM, CRMA, ARM, CPA, MBA, CIA)
- 10 + years of professional work experience
- Proven project management skills with excellent planning and organization skills
- Capacity to analyze and distill significant volume of information to arrive at clear and concise conclusions
- Ability to conduct research using internal business intelligence reports and external sources (including but not limited to government reports, risk outlooks, economic reports)
- Demonstrated creative problem-solving and business analytics skills
- Understanding of fundamentals of strategic business planning, financial and non-financial performance measures, and forward-looking business analysis
- Ability to make clear links among / between risks, business areas and implications to business objectives and corporate strategy
- Proficiency with relevant ERM and Risk Management Frameworks (COSO ERM, ISO 31000)
- Confident with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively communicate with
Senior Leaders of the Organization - Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Power BI) and basic artificial intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT),
- Experience with data analytics and visualization tools
- Flexible and able to adapt quickly to evolving business requirements
- Goal oriented with the ability to meet deadlines, achieve objectives and work under pressure
- Valid passport with ability to travel, domestically and internationally
- Based on equal qualifications, bilingualism (English and French) is desirable
- Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.
