Job Function: As a direct report to the VP, Health and Safety the Director of Health & Safety will support the development of the H&S Management system and direct, supervise and coordinate various Health & Safety business functions within the Health and Safety organization to ensuring the effective delivery the Health & Safety Managed Program. In addition to having the accountability to work directly with the various LOB’s in the preparation and execution of the various program the Director will also take a lead position in supporting and facilitating interactions with the unions. Specifically, this position will provide support to the Joint Policy Committee on Health, Safety and provide the lead management role for the Working Committee on Health and Safety.

SPECIFIC ACCOUTABILITIES

In the role of Director H&S, the incumbent will, oversee the activities of the Health and Safety Field Support team This includes:

  • Supports a culture of Safety and Accountability of the entire workforce and promotes a Leadership culture
  • Leadership, support and communication to LOB’s, functions and JHSC’s
  • Identify and correct safety risk situations
  • Hazard identification and facilitate determining effective controls
  • Roll out of safety initiatives and support implementation
  • Support corrective action implementation and effectiveness
  • Assist with the development of Health and Safety strategies in a manner that maintains value for the shareholder and enables the accomplishment of business objectives. Ensure the operational perspective has been considered.
  • Review and provide advice to Senior Management within Hydro One Networks on H, S, & E on the potential operational implications of investment decisions, recommended strategic direction and business planning. (resources required)
  • Act as a coach and facilitator to create and sustain a cooperative and supportive team environment, actively working with Hydro One staff and Union Representatives to ensure that the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) is understood by all and operating in a healthy and effective manner. Demonstrate openness and trust through the sharing of relevant information, and by being visible and accessible to employees, management staff and senior Union Representatives.
  • Provide day-to-day interpretation and application of the the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated Regulations, the IRS and the Hydro One Corporate requirements as they affect the rights, obligations and working conditions of the employer and employees.
  • Make effective recommendations on human resource issues for their direct/indirect reports, including hiring, discharge and discipline, and effectively resolve work performance problems. Provide clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback and recognize and reward achievements.
  • Provide input and make recommendations for change to health and safety initiatives based on emerging trends.
  • Consult, influence and maintain effective working relationships with Health & Safety stakeholders (internal teams, industry, employees, ) in order for Hydro One to meet its business objectives.
  • Support health & safety control processes, including reporting, assessments and causal analyses; recommend redirection where appropriate.
  • Be a Hydro One Networks spokesperson for health & safety issues and represent Hydro One Networks externally with industry associations, interest groups, etc.
  • Support the Vice President Health and Safety with Health, & Safety stakeholder initiatives and programs in order for Hydro One Networks to maintain effective working relationships and to meet its business objectives.
  • Participate in and support the development and lead the execution of safety initiatives to address emerging trends and workplace hazards.
  • Support and demonstrate leadership in initiatives to strengthen the organization’s safety culture.
  • Implement strategic changes to address recurring and systemic safety challenges

REQUIREMENTS:

  • College diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Ten (10) or more years of progressive technical/ professional experience, with demonstrated progressive senior leadership experience in safety management with a focus in utility, engineering or construction industries preferred
  • Utility experience required to understand the flow of work at a field level but also the unique hazards that exist in the Utility sector.

Perferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Safety would be an asset.
  • Certificate of Occupational Health and Safety would be an asset.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST).
