Job Description:
About the Role:
The Director, International Tax Reporting and Compliance is a senior role within the Tax Risk Management function, with primary accountability for Canadian tax compliance related to Sun Life’s foreign affiliates. This position ensures accurate reporting, proactive tax risk management, and full compliance with Canadian tax legislation, while overseeing internal resources and external service providers.
What you'll be doing
- Lead Canadian international tax compliance for foreign affiliates, including quarterly FAPI calculations, surplus and ACB tracking, and related EIFEL considerations.
- Maintain and manage tax attributes and tax fact base information for foreign affiliates.
- Provide Canadian international tax input on strategic initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, corporate reorganizations, and treasury financing activities.
- Conduct and oversee tax research and technical analysis on complex international tax matters.
- Support and manage audits by Canadian tax authorities, including liaising with government representatives and responding to audit inquiries as it pertains to international tax compliance.
- Oversee outsourcing, co‑sourcing, and secondment arrangements, ensuring quality, timeliness, and effective coordination.
- Lead and support the implementation of tax technology initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reporting.
- Monitor legislative developments in international and Canadian tax and communicate relevant impacts to senior stakeholders.
What you'll need to succeed
- CPA designation required; completion of an MTax program or CPA Canada In‑Depth Tax Course is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive tax experience in a large corporation and/or major accounting firm, including at least 5 years specializing in foreign affiliate taxation and attribute management.
- Deep technical knowledge of the Canadian foreign affiliate regime, including FAPI, surplus calculations, and related international tax concepts.
- Working knowledge of U.S. tax rules is an asset; financial services industry experience is advantageous but not required.
- Strong people and leadership skills to partner/influence internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience leading complex projects and managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong tax accounting and technical analysis skills.
- Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex tax issues to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to build effective relationships with Finance, Business Units, and internal tax partners.
- High attention to detail, sound judgment, and a proactive approach to risk management.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
