What Is in It for You
Reporting to the Senior Director, Portfolio Management, the Associate, Portfolio Management will provide direct support on a variety of Global processes, projects, and initiatives to support Sun Life Financial (SLF). Given the broad nature of the role, the candidate will often operate in a matrix environment, partnering with both senior and junior resources across the SLC Portfolio Management, SLC front office/finance, and Client (SLF) ALM teams.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Partnering with other SLC Portfolio Management resources, support enterprise-wide collateral and liquidity management processes, monitoring and reporting. This would include (but would not be limited to) preparing the following processes/reporting on behalf of the Client, supporting Client questions and additional analysis:
- Produce and enhance the Collateral Coverage Ratio and Repo Coverage Ratio reports for SLF. Analyze enterprise collateral and margin activities, providing insights to support risk management decisions related to derivatives and repo programs (partner with SLF Financial Risk Management)
- Support enterprise derivative analytics and monitoring by driving analysis on 5-year Derivative capacity testing, Credit Derivative usage monitoring and compliance reporting related to pledging policies (partner with SLF Financial Risk Management)
- Assist in the annual Business Plan and Strategic Plan activities that relate to asset supply for SLF, and support similar initiatives for the wider SLC Client base, as appropriate. This would include Capital Market Forecast, analysis related to supply/demand matching, and producing analytics to support negotiations of allocation of non-marketable assets to SLF and other SLC Clients
- Support Portfolio Management activities related to the Canada Mortgage Bond securitization program (MBS Issuance & sale, CMB program reinvestments, reporting, and hedging decisions)
Surplus & General Portfolio Management & Reporting:
- Monitor surplus portfolios across geographies and deliver insights on Surplus portfolio composition and risk exposure by analyzing asset allocation, duration positioning, and sensitivity to market risks.
- Monitor FVOCI gains and ensure communication of tactical trading activity and variance versus Plan between Client teams (Global and Business Group ALM, Corporate Finance) and SLC
- Surplus cash management responsibilities (partner with Business Group Portfolio Management, Client ALM/Finance/ Treasury resources)
- Support quarterly SLC investment contribution tracking, including and not limited to Earning on Surplus, Real Estate, Credit Experience and Equity performance analysis
- Partner with SLF Global ALM resources, coordinate discussions related to Surplus investment strategies, and surplus portfolio positioning among key downstream surplus owners (BG/legal entity level) to ensure consistency in decisions and actions
- Support CIO and other SLC Senior Managing Directors on global surplus portfolio reporting and analysis
- Coordinate and communicate large tactical trading initiatives and/or programs (e.g. ‘dry powder’ initiatives)
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED
- 1-3 years of experience in the investment industry
- University degree in finance, business or economics
- CFA designation with MBA/MFE (or equivalent) is preferred
- In depth knowledge of modern portfolio theory and application, including portfolio construction, asset pricing and risk management
- Knowledge of broad asset classes across the investment spectrum
- Understanding of the SLF liability profiles (all Business Groups) is preferred
- Strong client-focus and communication skills
- Creative, flexible thinker who enjoys exploring new ideas
- Problem solver, with demonstrated ability to deliver innovative solutions
- Ability to cultivate strong working relationships across various functional areas (Investments, ALM, Treasury, Risk and Finance)
- Experience with financial tools or software (i.e. Bloomberg, Blackrock Aladdin or Morningstar Direct)

Salary Range
58,000/58 000 - 100,000/100 000We are committed to pay transparency and equity. The base salary range for this role is competitive and we strive to ensure that compensation is fair and equitable. Your actual base salary will be determined by your unique skills, qualifications, experience, education, and geographic location.
