Position: Director, Physical Plant & Maintenance

Monday To Friday 9:00am-5:00pm (75 hours bi-weekly)

Status: Permanent Full-Time

Date Required: ASAP

Reporting to the Assistant Executive Director, the Director, Physical Plant Maintenance is responsible for leading, planning, coordinating, and evaluating all activities related to the maintenance, life safety, compliance, and operation of all physical facilities. The Director ensures all systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and emergency preparedness, operate reliably, safely, and in strict accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements across all organizational sites

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

  • Provide strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of all maintenance, preventative and reactive work, building systems, grounds, and capital assets for all facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, WHMIS, CSA/NFPA standards, and all related best practices and legislation.
  • Oversee the organization’s emergency, fire safety, and life safety systems: plan, schedule, and ensure regular inspection, testing, and upgrades of fire alarms, sprinklers, egress, lighting, etc.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance programs, policies, preventive schedules, audits, and corrective action plans.
  • Supervise the recruitment, orientation, training, evaluation, and discipline of maintenance staff and contractors.
  • Lead maintenance budgeting, capital planning, and monitor operations, ensuring projects are completed within approved budgets and timelines.
  • Act as the organizational lead for physical plant input on capital projects, renovations, and major equipment upgrades.
  • Direct emergency preparedness: maintain, revise, and deliver training on all emergency procedures, and represent the organization for emergency planning with authorities.
  • Implement systems for documentation, record-keeping, asset management, and compliance logging.
  • Conduct building/system safety and maintenance reviews, hazard identification, and risk management processes.
  • Act as primary liaison to inspectors, contractors, regulators, and other external stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Leadership.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management, or a relevant field.
  • Professional certification (e.g., CRSP, CSP, NEBOSH, fire safety, emergency management) is preferred.
  • 8-10 years of progressive facility management or maintenance leadership, ideally in healthcare, long-term care, or multi-site environments.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of building systems, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, electronic maintenance, and asset management systems.
  • Physical ability to inspect and access all areas of building infrastructure.
  • Three years experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity, preferably in a unionized health care/long-term care organization.
