THE ROLE

Imagine the excitement and ability to show off your incredible skills in a deployed environment (overseas) for six months delivering fitness, sports, and recreation services to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and partner nations from across the world. As a deployed Fitness, Sports, and Recreation team member, you are not just delivering these services, but enhancing the overall morale and welfare of all the troops deployed.

The Fitness, Sports and Recreation Coordinator and Supervisor are part of an enthusiastic team of adventurous individuals who enjoy meaningful employment and contributing in a team-based land or ship-based environment. Excited by the opportunity to deploy as a civilian among our CAF personnel abroad, you are a team player in a fast-paced setting. You are able to adapt to new challenges in an ever-changing dynamic environment.

The Fitness, Sports and Recreation Coordinator and Supervisor will be contributing at the forefront of supporting the CAF abroad. Most importantly, you will be coordinating Fitness, Sports and Recreation for the CAF, and partner nations. You will conduct personal and group fitness, sports training and events, organize and deliver recreation events, as well as delivering briefings and guidance on fitness, sports and recreation policies, directives and procedures.

The Fitness, Sports, and Recreation Coordinator and Supervisor play an important role in enhancing the morale of military members by planning recreational activities, outings and events. Keeping the military energized ensures they are mentally and physically ready to sustain the difficulties of military operations, and live healthy balanced lives.

The Supervisor is selected from the pool of Coordinator candidates and after successful completion of the Training and Selection Course. The Supervisor oversees the fitness, sports, and recreation department. Supporting and leading a team of Coordinators towards developing and delivering exceptional programs and services for the CAF and their partner nations.

The Supervisor is responsible for managing team members and program schedules, performance management, and overall management of the fitness, sports, and recreation department.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED

Education, Certifications and Licenses

Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Sciences, or a related field

(OR College diploma or certificate in Exercise Sciences, or a related field)

Current Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) designation, an asset

Canadian citizenship

Must have a valid Canadian passport

Possess a valid Canadian driver’s license

Experience

In planning, organizing, and coordinating the operations and delivery of physical fitness, sports, and recreation programs

In applying policies, procedures, regulations, and applicable legislation

In evaluating physical fitness

In preparing and conducting physical fitness training sessions

In preparing and administering tournaments and sporting events

In officiating sporting events and/or athletic competitions

In coaching sports

Additional Supervisor Experience

In managing facilities

In inventory control and loss prevention

In personnel administration

Competencies

OTHER INFORMATION

The successful candidates will be invited to participate in a multi-day paid training and selection session scheduled for September 20 to 29 where you will learn more in-depth about the day-to-day expectations, technical work-related training, as well as a basic understanding of military practices and procedures. This will give you an opportunity to learn more about our organization as well as interact with like-minded people that may be deploying with you. Your completion of the training session will be valid for 2 years.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Completion of a health, dental and psychosocial assessment;
  • A successful candidate would complete a background check. Internals must maintain their Enhanced Reliability status;
  • Current CPR and Basic First Aid qualifications;
  • Willingness to work a non-conventional workweek (e.g. 56hrs per week/weekends);
  • Position requires walking, heavy lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing (i.e. 50 lbs/ 23 kg or more);
  • Accommodations: restricted to shared living quarters on camp, privacy is limited.

START DATE AND LOCATION

Deployment start dates may take place within the next 2 years.

Deployment contracts are 6 month terms. Salary will be half of the posted annual salary.

THE LOCATION

Latvia:

Operation (Op) REASSURANCE refers to the military activities undertaken by CAF to support North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) assurance and deterrence measures in Central and Eastern Europe. The CAF lead and participate in international exercises and are in Latvia as part of NATO, aimed at capacity building with partner nations and Latvia. The local currency is Euro (€) and official language is Latvian (Unofficial: Russian). Weather is comparable to Western Canada, warm summers with extended daylight (peak avg 22˚C), and cold rainy winters with limited daylight (low avg 1˚C). Wi-Fi is available on the base.

HMC Ships: (Coordinator position only)

The RCN deployed two ships in support of two separate operations (Europe, Asia & the Middle East) to perform a wide range of tasks ranging from deterrent presence and situational awareness to exercises and the conduct of operational missions. These ships provide NATO, Combined Maritime Forces (Middle East/ Africa), and the Asia-Pacific region with an immediate operational response capability both in peacetime and in crisis. They demonstrate resolve and foster solidarity, as well as enhance relations with partner nations through visits and exchanges.

DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT

CFMWS has been delivering morale and welfare programs to deployed CAF members since 2000 in the area of fitness, sports and recreation. We also assist with other amenities and support including travel assistance, messes, retail and barber services to make time away on deployment easier for CAF members.
