Job Description:

Reporting to the Manager North American Accounts Payable (NA AP), the Team Leader will be responsible for leading the Accounts Payable team. The emphasis is on ensuring that transaction processing is completed on time and within an effective control environment.

The Team Leader’s role is to provide oversight and guidance to the North American Accounts Payable team for general expense transaction processing, ensuring that procedures are followed as documented and compliance requirements are met. This role provides input and recommendations to policy and standards, supports the company business continuity testing process and system enhancement testing. As well, this role entails working closely with Vendor Master Maintenance, Procurement, Finance teams and other business units on a day-to-day basis.

What will you do?

  • Set clear objectives, define roles/responsibilities, and ensure the team aligns with Global Procurement and Payment vision.

  • Monitor workloads, resourcing, and productivity across the team to ensure service standards are met.

  • Communicate expectations, goals, and feedback to the group regularly and resolve any concerns or issues actively.

  • Support team members’ professional development by providing opportunities for training and growth.

  • Collaborate, build, and maintain relationships with operational leaders across North America.

  • Act with a sense of urgency on inquiries including escalation or complaints.

  • Ensure that all tasks connected to invoice processing are met with a strong adherence to the process and that timelines for payments to suppliers are paid in accordance with agreed terms.

  • Foster a mindset of continuous improvement and learning and encourage behaviours that build the desired culture and environment.

  • Ensure the success and engagement of your direct reports by fostering a positive work environment.

  • Participate in projects and transformation activities as requested (ERP implementation, streamline AP processes, robotic process automations, etc.).

What You Bring to The Table:

  • Previous leadership experience.

  • Accounting designation or relevant working experience managing the Accounts Payable function.

  • Experience with large ERP system i.e., Ariba and SAP S4 Hana.

  • Ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced, multi-task environment.

  • Must be detail-oriented, have a proactive approach and the ability to coach and influence desired behavior.

  • Ability to investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.

  • Ability to look at the overall process - within department and upstream and downstream - including information flows, risks, controls.

  • General tax knowledge required - commodity and withholding, US tax guidelines.

  • Proficient on MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio.

Assets:

  • University or college degree in accounting or relevant business or financial experience.

  • Minimum 3 years experience with leading or supervising a team within accounts payable.

  • Strong systems understanding required to understand integrated process steps and module functionality and interdependencies of SAP ARIBA

  • Industry experience and knowledge in accounts payable, purchasing, accounting.

  • Bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written).

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
