Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor and Site Coordinator, the Breast Imaging Technologist (General Procedures & Cardiac Sonography), practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice as well as utilizing a client and family centered care model and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health (FH).

The Breast Imaging Technologist performs diagnostic mammography and breast ultrasound exams and interventional breast procedures a majority of the time, ensuring quality patient care. Duties include receiving and completing requisitions, entering relevant data into the Radiology Information System (RIS), preparing examination trays and patients for specific procedures, operating computerized imaging equipment including processing and archiving of acquired data, monitoring patient during procedures, and monitoring equipment performance. Participates on committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.


Responsibilities

  1. Receives and prepares patients by obtaining and completing requisitions, reviewing patient’s case history and correlating clinical history with examination to be performed. Assesses the nature of the issue to determine a process for testing, enters patient information into the diagnostic imaging information system and imaging processing systems as required, explains procedures to patients and answers any questions that may arise.
  2. Prepares patients for diagnostic mammography examinations by explaining procedures and giving directions for participation. Produces and develops mammograms according to program standards. Refers problems regarding quality of images, work procedures or workflow to Site Coordinator.
  3. Performs breast ultrasound procedures by methods such as positioning patients, placing probe on designated areas, utilizing ultrasound techniques in accordance with established procedures to obtain images, labeling permanent records and archiving of acquired data; refers problems regarding quality of images, work procedures or workflow to Site Coordinator.
  4. Assists in procedural rooms by setting up biopsy trays following basic aseptic technique, assisting the radiologist during the interventional procedures, and providing support and comfort to the patient during the procedure.
  5. Checks resultant images for technical quality and completeness, prepares technical worksheet and discusses images with the radiologist to ensure examinations address designated requirements.
  6. Facilitates the workflow of designated work areas by checking information on requisitions meets departmental standards, regulating inpatient examination time and arranging for transportation of patients according to departmental procedure; transports patients as required.
  7. Promotes education in the area of breast cancer and risk factors, to increase participant adherence to screening mammography and breast self-examination guidelines.
  8. Participates in the departmental Continuous Quality Improvement program by using established monitoring and auditing methodologies to perform quality assurance checks. Carries out CAR Accreditation process as well as QA for DAP requirements.
  9. Monitors equipment performance and performs quality control duties in accordance with recommended manufacturers’ guidelines, including recording results as well as identifying malfunctioning equipment for repair; notifies supervisor of equipment malfunctions according to established procedures.
  10. Demonstrates procedures and usage of equipment to staff including medical residents, technologists and students. Participates in orientation of new employees by monitoring progress, ensuring policies and procedures are respected.
  11. Participates in maintaining patient and hospital records by entering data into the Radiology and Hospital Information System as required.
  12. Participates in approved research and special projects in collaboration with Supervisor and other health care professionals.
  13. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience


Certification with the CAMRT. Successful completion of CAMRT/BCIT Certificate in Breast Imaging or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certification with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Sonography Canada Certified.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of mammography protocols, applications and equipment with understanding of the principles of mammography including positioning, pathology as well as related patient care techniques.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of theory and practice for Diagnostic Medical Sonography breast procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Imaging practitioners established by the CAMRT and/or other relevant national professional associations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based practice related to designated modality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organization policies, procedures, and standards of care, including practice of safe work procedures with modality equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PACS/Radiology Information Systems, i.e. digital imaging, image archiving and retrieval.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (orally and in writing).
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with clients and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff and staff of external agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
