We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the Wood Street Centre team. The WSC school is located in downtown Whitehorse, Yukon that provides dynamic student learning through experiential programming. Each program operates as a school within a school, this model allows each program to have their own unique schedule and learning objectives. This position provides the opportunity to build relationships with your students as you work with them throughout each day as you facilitate the integration of each of the courses offered in the OPES (Outdoor Pursuits Experiential Science) 9 Program. Using the land as the platform and grounding for the courses offered. You will harness the students interests and build on their strengths.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Significant experience teaching Outdoor Education, Social Studies and Science
  • Experience teaching in an experiential education programing model at the secondary level;
  • Teaching experience in a multi-disciplinary approach;
  • Experience planning, organizing and managing secondary students in integrated studies in an outdoor field setting;
  • Experience adapting curriculum to meet a wide range of learning styles and abilities;
  • Possession of Wilderness First Responder Certification, or willingness to obtain prior to the school year;
  • Current Class 4 driver’s license, or willingness to obtain prior to the school;
  • Teaching experience in Bike Repair and Maintenance or similar course would be an asset;
  • Experience teaching and working with Yukon First Nations students is an asset;
  • Experience implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Student Learning, and Behavior Plans for students would be an asset;
  • Training and certification for a variety of outdoor pursuits specific to outdoor experiential programs would be an asset.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Strong planning and organizational skills, combined with the ability to adapt curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, consultants and related agencies;
  • Ability to work as a member of a professional team and willingness to participate in the experiential learning philosophy;
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students and adults to create positive environments for learning;
  • Willingness to work in a flexible and ever-changing experiential learning environment in: field settings, off-site facilities and school based classroom;
  • Ability to use a wide range of technology, to take initiative and work independently is a requirement of the position;
  • Knowledge of IEPs, the services, and the accommodations available to support student learning;
  • An understanding and commitment to inclusiveness and a commitment to experiential learning, multi-dimensional learning and the ability to honor the oral tradition;
  • Collaboratively work with and manage other paraprofessionals in an outdoor setting;
  • Willingness to work outside the typical school schedule, including evenings and weekends, leading students on multi-day field trips and activities;
  • A knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations students.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process
  • Yukon First Nations 101 , to be completed at your first opportunity.
  • Class 4 Driver License or equivalent
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification
