F.H. Collins Secondary School is currently seeking a passionate educator to join our dynamic learning community. F.H.C is a dual-track English/French Immersion school serving approximately 800 students in grades 8 through 12. We provide students with a diverse range of academic, athletic performance, outdoor/experiential, trades, and arts programs. This temporary Learning Assistance Teacher (Shared Resource Program) position is 1.0 FTE

Position: Learning Assistance Teacher, Shared Resource Program (STEP, formerly known as multi-needs)

Start Date: January 13, 2026

End Date: June 12, 2026

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education degree with a major in Special Education or related field;
  • Post-graduate coursework related to students with diverse multiple disabilities would be an asset;
  • Demonstrated success working with, and effectively supporting, students with a wide range of abilities, including significant physical and cognitive delays;
  • Demonstrated success supporting students who use non-verbal communication;
  • Demonstrated success facilitating learning opportunities to maximize student potential;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with lifting and positioning techniques, adaptive devices, environmental controls and augmented communication;
  • Demonstrated success coordinating a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team to develop, implement and evaluate appropriate Individual Education Plans (IEPs) which would include but not be limited to self-help skills involving personal hygiene and recreation/leisure skills. This includes supervision and assistance with personal hygiene of students including toileting, diapering, feeding and caregiving;
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with students, parents, consultants, staff and community services to plan and implement the transition leaving school to adulthood;
  • Successful teaching in a cross-cultural setting with a knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of First Nation students.
  • Experience working with, and effectively supporting, students with significant learning challenges;

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Experience and training in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
  • Extensive experience and success working with students with special needs
  • Demonstrated superior planning organizational skills
  • Ability to include and support Educational Assistants in the implementation of Individual Education Plans;
  • Class 4 Yukon Drivers license or willingness to obtain;
  • Current First Aid training and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification or willingness to obtain;
  • American Sign Language proficiency would be an asset;
  • A knowledge of and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of First Nations people of Yukon and a culturally diverse student population
  • Experience teaching a program-based classroom with students who have significant needs required for some of these multiple LAT postings; considered an asset for the other postings
  • Ability to plan and implement appropriate integration of students into the appropriate school environment

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
