Selkirk Elementary School is located within the traditional territory of the people of Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. Selkirk Elementary School is a dual track English/French elementary school, Grades K - 7 with a student population of approximately 380. Key to Selkirk Elementary School’s philosophy is the incorporation of social emotional learning, developmentally responsive practice, and structured literacy and numeracy programming

End Date: June 12th, 2026

Assignment: Grade 5 Intensive French Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent with a specialization in Intensive French, French Immersion, First language French teacher, or FSL qualifications;
  • Experience teaching at the elementary level;
  • Bilingual written and spoken French and English language;
  • Experience teaching students performing at wide-ranging levels of achievement and with diverse learning styles;
  • Experience teaching Intensive French would be an asset;

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices in structured literacy and numeracy including the ability to apply assessment for, as and of student learning;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population;
  • Strong ability to adapt and modify curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities;
  • Ability to use developmentally responsive approaches to develop effective relationships with students;
  • Experience in strong classroom management by setting clear routines and fostering a positive, structured learning environment;
  • Ability to assess students’ learning and report progress to parents/guardians using Assessment for Learning and outcome-based grading principles on a competency-based curricular framework;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, consultants, and community agencies;
  • Willingness and ability to participate in the total school program;
  • An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the school community.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process
