Yukon Education and the Selkirk Elementary School Council invite applications from dynamic educators who can lead Selkirk Elementary School and create a strong consensus with a diverse group of stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have the balance of skills necessary to co-create a strong, relevant and culturally inclusive community of learners that allows all students to reach their potential.

Selkirk Elementary School is a dual track English/French elementary school, Grades K - 7 with a student population of approximately 380. Key to Selkirk’s philosophy is the incorporation of social emotional learning, developmentally responsive practice, and structured literacy and numeracy programming. Selkirk serves Whitehorse English language students from the downtown and Riverdale neighbourhoods and French Immersion students from Whitehorse and the Greater Whitehorse areas.

Selkirk Elementary is located on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta'an Kwäch 'än Council, and partnering with Yukon First Nations is a school priority.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Possession of, or coursework towards, a Master's Degree in Education or equivalent in educational administration and/or elementary curriculum in a French Immersion setting;
  • At least one year of experience in an administrative role in a French Immersion setting;
  • Bilingual both French and English- written and oral;
  • Demonstrates experience with, or a strong willingness to learn about, the Neurosequential Model and developmentally responsive practices to support student growth and well-being.
  • Experience as an educational leader, providing instructional leadership, supervision, mentorship and evaluation;
  • Recent experience working with First Nation learners, families and partners;
  • Experience in assessing and responding to student needs in social /emotional domains, life skills, development, behavior support, threat assessment, and crisis intervention.
  • Successful teaching experience, Grades K-7 in a French Immersion school;
  • Competency with First Nations language(s) is an asset;
  • Completion of provincial/regional Principal and/or Supervisory Officer Qualifications is an asset

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop, establish, and maintain rapport with students, parents, staff, school council, and First Nations;
  • Strong and effective leadership skills with the demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate teachers and students to reach their full potential;
  • Ability to foster an environment of instructional excellence to deepen teacher learning that improves student outcomes;
  • A knowledge and sensitivity to the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally-diverse student population including the ability to apply the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in a school setting;
  • Decision making skills which demonstrate effective listening, ability to accommodate and to mediate diverse views from educational partners, and the commitment to seeking cooperative resolution;
  • Strong classroom management, planning and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to implement school-wide change with measurable results
  • Experience and philosophy of restorative practice and positive approaches to behaviour interventions and support;
  • Knowledge of support systems to assist at risk students;
  • Ability to use curriculum to support innovation and transform practices to support student engagement and learning.
  • Desire and passion for developing and maintaining strong and respectful relationships and trust with students, their families, and the community as a whole;


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
