We are currently seeking a talented grade 1 teacher to join the team at Christ the King Elementary School. Christ the King Elementary School provides a faith-based, Roman Catholic education within the public school system of Yukon Education. Our school sits on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council within the wilderness city of Whitehorse, Yukon. CKES is a K-7 school of approximately 360 students, serving a diverse cultural population. Our educational professionals facilitate academic excellence and model life-long learning. We do this by creating a learning environment where respect, understanding, security, risk-taking, responsibility and reaching out are important values. We believe that each child is unique and special. The values we teach are based on a Catholic philosophy of education. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Recent experience teaching elementary grades

    Experience adapting curriculum to meet a range of learning abilities;

    Experience teaching balanced and structured literacy programs, which include conducting running records, and guided reading
  • Experience facilitating numeracy learning in a developmentally responsive manner
  • Experience and/or training teaching students who are English language learners;
  • Experience developing and implementing individual education plans and student support plans;
  • Experience incorporating First Peoples Principles of Learning across the curriculum
  • Experience using various technology, including Epson boards, will be an asset



DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population
  • An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the faith life of the school community;
  • Willingness to support the school mission statement and participate in all religious activities;
  • Willingness and ability to participate in the total school program, including religious education;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, consultants, and community agencies;
  • Ability to assess students’ learning and report progress to parents/guardians using Assessment for Learning and outcome-based grading principles on a competency-based curricular framework;
  • Ability to use trauma-informed approaches to develop effective relationships with students

  • Strong ability to develop differentiated instructional opportunities for students, to collaborate with LAT teachers and educational assistants;
  • Strong ability to adapt and modify curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities;



CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process
  • Yukon First Nations 101, to be completed at your first opportunity.



Relocation may be available.

Preference will be given to candidates who are practicing members of the Roman Catholic Church, committed to excellence in Catholic Education.
